1 Year Old Eating Habits - Fort Stewart,GA

My 12.5 month old son refuses to eat any finger foods other than cheerios or puffs. He loves all fruits and veggies if they are pureed. When I put fruit or veggie pieces on his tray with the cheerios, he either pokes at them and then ignores them, or he will gently pick up the fruit and veggies and drop them over the side of the highchair, leaving the cheerios to eat. The same is true when only fruit or veggie finger foods are offered.

We just had our 1 year well baby check-up and the pediatrician told us that he won't starve himself if we only offer finger foods, and we should stop pureed foods now. He is a healthy size and there is no worry about not eating enough.

So, what does you 1 year old eat and drink throughout the day? Please include your child's age in months so I can compare amounts of food given. Also, if you have any tips to get him to eat his food that would be great!

What can I do next?

My daughter is 14 months old. She is also picky about vegetables as finger foods. The only way I can get her to eat them is to hide them in foods like spaghetti or anything with a sauce where she won't taste them, but sometimes that doesn't even work and she will just start gagging. Just don't give up, keep offering these foods or he will never eat them. It took my daughter 2 months to drink milk but I never stopped offering it and now if I give her a cup she drinks the whole thing, no problem.

As far as what she eats throughout the day it varies. Today she had a bowl of oatmeal for breakfast (adult portion) and a cup of milk. Her morning snack was a few teddy grahams ( I break them up in small pieces) and applesauce. She hasn't had lunch yet because she is napping but I plan on giving her a grilled cheese and tomato sandwich and a cup of juice ( 1/2 juice 1/2 water) afternoon snack will be peaches or oranges. Dinner spaghetti with vegetables mixed in with a cup of milk. Cheerios and yogurt before bed if she still seems hungry which she usually is.

My son did the same thing, and he's 4 now and a horrible eater - and I know I enabled that because i stopped "offering" the foods at such a young age that he didn't eat...and now - he says he doesn't like them, even though he is offered them with meals daily - he still doesn't touch them. Keep offering it to him - or else you might have the problems i have. Although my son is getting better with eating more meat (besides chicken), i can't get him to touch a vegetable and fruit is very limited...

My daughter is 14 months old. Her eating habits seem to change from day to day...some days she loves something, some days she hates it. Some days she wants only finger foods, some days none.
So, if it is helpful, here is what she had to eat today:
8 oz whole milk when she woke up (6:30)
~ 10 mandarin orange segments (canned in 100% juice) and 1/2 piece of whole wheat toast w/ peanut butter (8:30)
8 oz whole milk after morning nap (11)
cut up soy hot dog, canned salt-free green beans, 1 pc provolone cheese (12:30)
1/2 adult serving raisins and couple crackers (4:00)
1/4 avocado cut into bite-size pieces, ~1/4 c frozen peas (thawed), baby portion whole milk yogurt, ~1/2 c whole wheat noodles sprinkled w/ cheese (6:00)
6 oz whole milk at bedtime (7:00)

She also has a sippy of water throughout the day, maybe around 10 oz. Hope this helps!

My son was 'learning' to use a spoon by that age. He was happy to eat his pureed/chopped foods that way (we fed him everything we were eating, just processed to a smooth to coarse texture depending upon his age at the time).

My son would do the same when he was a year old. He was underweight , so I was worrying a lot. He ate baby food until 13 months , he wasn't interested in anything other than pureed baby food, puffs etc.If I made him eat it inspite of him refusing, he would gag and throw up. But a month or so later , he started developing interest in finger foods and the regular food I make at home. And then he didn't want pureed food anymore.
My pediatrician's advise was to keep offering him the food many times because picky eaters need to taste the food like 50 times(acc to her) to eventually start eating it. I would say give him time but keep offering it to him, he will eventually eat it. Also he should see you eating these , make it look like it's very yummy or play some games like he eats one cheerio and you eat one. And then do that with veggies.
