Hi, I was wondering what some of you moms did for your one years old b-days? Very big or Very small? My son's b-day is in Oct. and I was thinking about taking the day from work with my hubby and doing something fun, just not sure what yet?

What can I do next?

Keep it small, just nearby relatives and maybe close family friends. Go ahead and go to work; save days off for illnesses, etc. You can still have a great little party on a weekend or evening. Cake, the birthday song, and a few gifts is plenty of stimulation for a one year old!

My son's first birthday party is tomorrow. We are having it at our house and it is going to be pretty small just family and close friends.

we had family over and had cake. it's the same thing we do every year, pretty low key, but in my family, you cant have a birthday without cake. My 3 year old was super disappointed that our dog's 10 year birthday on wed did not equal cake for her. :-)

Keep it small - just family. A one year old will NOT remember the party. Pictures will serve to show that you celebrated his special day. You'll have plenty of other, more memorable, years to celebrate.

We always do a big party, but can't really help it b/c we have 6 siblings, and 10 nieces and nephews. The baby doesn't know (or care) about a big party, so if you just want to do something low-key, then I think that's great! Maybe a trip to the zoo or something would be nice for October weather. :)

If you have a party, just try not to worry about what other people at the party think. Don't try to come up with the most memorable, or most fun, etc. It is all about having fun and celebrating without stressing yourself out. Keep it simple! Then you don't have to keep up each year with whatever you did the previous year. You want to enjoy the day too. And don't have expectations that your son will love his cake, love his gifts, be in a good mood, etc. Sometimes we can get so disappointed if they don't have the greatest birthday experience ever after we put in so much effort.

You can also start a tradition of going to a favorite place for dessert or the zoo, a park, etc.

Two functions of a 1-year-old bday: You celebrate with YOUR friends (and their families) that your darling baby is a year old AND you can have some pictures for your child's albums to show him how you celebrated his birthday.

So, since your child won't remember it, do what you want. Big, small, your friends, or just your immediate family. Even if it's just you, your husband, your son, and a little trip to the zoo, that would be cute for the baby book too. You don't have to have a party. But, if you do, that's fine too. Any kind of party you're comfortable with will honor his birthday just fine. Make it as small as you want. Have fun!

something small with close family and friends is ok, kids this age will not remember any of it, and will get upset with some of the noise, but do be sure and get the picture of baby with the cake, Mine when I put it out of reach put his foot in it, got the picture to prove it.. ha ha. he wanted that cake.

With DD1 we had a huge birthday bash for her first inviting all of her and our friends and family. It was very overwhelming, especially for the baby. When DD2 turned 1 last month, we had a small party with our family and some of our closest friends. It was much more pleasant for everyone.

We kept it small. There are not going to remember it anyways. It is more for us than them. I figured we would save the money for when she gets older.

Just remember that first birthdays are for the grownups, not the child. It's really like the best "mother's day" ever.

You and your husband can still work. Do something with him when you get off. Believe me when he gets older. You will be taking a lot of days off for there birthday when they get older and know what a birthday is.
