DC is correct, honey contains botulism spores and infants aren't able to digest them before they get sick from them. My doc and all the books say one year is the time when their tummies are fully developed and it is safe. I did wait about another month with mine, just to be on the safe side.

I have never heard that about the allergies. In fact, I have heard the opposite- honey that is locally grown will help your body build up immunities toward the allergens in your area. I have heard if you have allergies you should eat/drink locally grown honey. If allergies are a concern for you, I guess I would check with you pediatrician to see which is correct.

Honey is actually dangerous to children under 1 because of the possibility of infant botulism. Bacteria spores in the honey can infect babies. Older children and adults have a more mature immune system that easily fights the spores, but babies aren't quiet ready yet. I think that after 12 months you should be fine.

I wouldn't give too much but maybe a 1/4 cup. After 1yr old, honey should be fine..

Personally I wouldnt give your child a lot of honey at 1 yr. The problem with giving honey to infants is that they can build antigens to bees/pollens in your area and your child could develop allergies. Their little systems are on hyper-drive right now - honey trains it in the wrong way.

Hope that helps you decide -
