so ive been breast feeding and my milk is in, i leak and can express milk before and after feedings. my girl sleeps alot anddoesnt seem as alert.. she has to be woke up to eat and its very hard to get her awaken and almost as soon as i put her to breast it seems like shes tryn to go to sleep. she hasnt pooped in two days, and her last poo was still dark. she has only had two bowel movements since the black tar diapers. im just getting worried. i went to the doctor yesterday and he told me not to worry so much, but of course im going to. my son pooped all day long it seemed like. i try to wake and feed her every 2-3 hours but she ends up falling asleep and using me more as a pacifier. i tried to give her some formula bc i thouhgt i was starving her and she didnt even eat half an ounce. i dont know if the formula had something to do with it either... just need some words of wisdom on this please.also im taking iron supplements, pre-natals, fenugreek, motrin, and an occasional loratab-

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

this last feeding was way more pleasant with some of the tips i received. i gave her a washcloth bath, changed her diaper and got her good and alert before i put her to breast. she ate great! im going to take her clothes off and change her diaper and get her stimulated very well before she feeds again. and thank you so much for the re-assurance on her not pooping. the girls at the hospital made such a big deal about it, (they were nursing students tho) and they got me all worked up. i want all of you to know all words of wisdom are appreciated- you help me soo much and make me feel more assured
** she just pooped!! yea lol- never thought id be so excited about poop. i need to quit being such a worry wort

motrin? I don't know, does motrin promote sleepiness?
and I don't know what loratab is.
The pooping will happen.
Breastfed babies don't poop too much, especially early on.
It's because all of the milk is being absorbed, digested.
I think you shouldn't wake her to feed her.
Maybe once in the morning around 7 if necessary.
Other than that, let her set her own schedule.
You are not starving her.
Please don't give her any formula.
You've got more than enough milk for her.
Remember to breathe.
Happy Thanksgiving.

I would strip her down to a diaper when she nurses. This can help keep her awake. And boobie babies can go a long time without pooping - very normal because so much of the breastmilk is completely absorbed :)

Formula can be very binding to a breastfed baby - I would avoid it :)

when I nursed this young I had to strip my baby down to just a diaper then change the diaper before switching to the other breast or he would just sleep the day away now I can't get the boy to SLEEP.

Its perfectly normal for a breastfed baby to go a week or so without pooping.

at least you know she can poop. So that is a good sign. Just keep feeding her and she should go soon. The poop will turn to a yellow color. If it doesn't and she still hasn't gone I would talk to the doc, but it sounds like it is just taking a couple of days for her to get used to the breastmilk. If she is crying a lot then maybe avoid dairy ... but it is still so early. She is only a week old. Congratulations on your baby.

Some babies are lazy eaters! Also, its totally normal for a BF baby to not have a BM for a few days. If you have time I would see if you have a local La Leche League chapter. They are BF experts and mine always helped me calm my fears when it came to BF. Its hard to measure how much milk they are getting when you BF, I know, but I wouldn't worry, especially if your doctor wasn't worried.

You're not starving her. Everything you described is normal and your doctor confirmed that she is healthy and normal. Breast milk is best so keep doing what you're doing. Enjoy your baby! Good luck and Congratulations!!

When my little one was about a week she didn't poop for a week and a day. I thought that there was something wrong, but when she finally pooped it went everywhere! So make sure and carry extra clothes for her. I think she will be fine. I was advised to move her legs around especially when she was taking a bath.
Best of Luck to you.

At this point, you have nothing to worry about unless she's crying most of the time, which doesn't seem to be the case. You could gently try doing bicycle movements with her legs. It's great exercise and might get things moving! =)

My kids would sometimes go a week without pooping when they were newborns, and then other times would poop all day long! I think as long as it's not hard balls, it's fine. I have heard that it's not very likely for breast fed babies to get constipated. If your ped is not worried, don't worry! And as far as the feeding, unless she is underweight, I don't think you need to wake her, do you?? Wait until she is hungry and then feed her. Unless you get other instructions from her ped.
Good luck!
