(1) Tubes in Ears and (2) Keratosis

(1) My youngest just had tubes put in his ears 2 weeks ago today. His ears are still draining - usually orange and sometimes green. My older son never had ear infections, so this is all new to me. I'm just curious as to how long his ears will drain like this (or how long it is OK for them to drain like this). Should I be taking him to the doctor for drops, or is this a good thing that they are draining? He's sleeping well, so I know he's not in any pain. I apologize if this is a dumb question - I haven't had the time to research it yet.

(2) My older son (3 1/2) has had keratosis his entire life on his cheeks, arms and thighs. It's never eased up and we've tried many things over the counter. I had him set to see a dermatologist this week, but I have to cancel the appointment and it will take another 2 months to get him in. I'm wondering if any of you have any secret over-the-counter potions, and what you use for sunscreen as a lot of sunscreens seem to make it worse.

PS - We have already tried using (and quite diligently for months at a time) Aquaphor, 1% hydrocortisone, the two mixed together, Eucerine Intensive Care Plus, Arbonne products, and Exzema over the counter lotions with no luck, so please don't leave those recommendations. As far as sunsreen, the pink baby sunscreen (can't remember the name) causes the keratosis to get worse too.

Thanks for any input you may have :)

So What Happened?

(1) Regarding the tubes, I actually got a call back from a nurse and took him back to Children's before I got any responses yesterday. They sucked the fluid out of his ears and prescribed drops for 10 days. Thanks for all of your input though...I appreciate it.

(2) My older son has Keratosis Pilaris (sp?). It is just as bad in the summer as it is in the winter unfortunately. Thanks so much for all of your tips on lotions and sunscreens - I can't wait to check them out!

Hi L.,
Glad you brought him in for drops. Both of my kids had tubes put in and they were both sent home with drops automatically.
I noticed the mention of dairy in another post. By oldest has Down syndrome also and had a lot of sinus infections as well. We switched him to Rice Milk (which is also gluten free) to help reduce mucous.

Good luck. The tubes made a huge difference in both of my kids. So nice to not have constant ear infections (not to mention letting them hear clearly at such a critical time of language development.

Hi L.,

not to worry... the tubes are doing their job. My son has tubes and had them placed 18months ago. It's totally normal for them to be draining alot over the next month. After that, the doctor gave us some drops to use if they cont to drain (which one of ears still often does). But again, initially that is totally normal. Glad to hear he's sleeping and doing well. Tubes are a Godsent.

(1) My son has had 2 sets of tubes. The continued ear drainage is not normal, and as another poster said, is likely the sign of a continued infection or possibly a granuloma (which our son had in the second surgery). In our experience, our son responded well to the Ciprodex drops. I'd encourage you to follow up with the ENT.

(2) Our son also has KP on his cheeks, arms and thighs. We saw a dermatologist at Children's Hospital. She suggested (as you have already done) hydrocortisone to reduce redness and Eucerin Plus (with alpha hydroxy) to reduce the roughness. She informed us that there is really nothing we can do, as it's not related to diet or sensitives, and that he would hopefully grow out of it. Unfortunately, I'm 32 and still have it, so I'm skeptical about him outgrowing the condition. At any rate, it seems to get better in the summer when his skin is less try, so hopefully you'll experience the same with your son. The cosmeticsdatabase.com has a great list of safe sunscreens for kids. We've had luck with California Baby and Badger. I've also read great things about Vivesana and plan to purchase it this summer.

(2) My 3yr old son has keratosis and so do I. I never knew what it was until his Ped. told us. He gave us some medicated lotion to use on it. It was more of a pain to use it than to just let it be. Our keratosis gets worse in the summer and the lotion said to keep the areas covered. Anyway, I've not seen where our sunscreen makes it worse. I use L'Oreal Ombrelle Kids for the kids and L'Oreal Ombrelle for me, or Coppertone Sport (with the high SPF). The kereatosis doesn't seem to bother my son. Also use a loofa when giving baths, it will help too.

1) my babe 10 months old just had tube surgery 3 weeks ago. she is a whole new happy baby! yeah! the doc told me after the surgery that it was normal to have drainage and that we may even see bloody drainage. Use the drops until they run out. I think you can even ask the doc for a refill if you think it's needed.
you can still give baths but make sure you use ear plugs until your post-op appt. that is what we did. they gave us plugs. now we can give her a bath w/o plugs if the bath is not a buuble bath. but if you use bubbles in your bath then be sure to keep using ear plugs! good luck! tubes rock!

Hi L.,

Sorry to hear of your situation. Its hard enough with one child having issues but two? Nothing worse for us Moms to have our children in pain.
If I my suggest something to you. I read that you have tried topically all of the recommendations so I can see your frustration. What is happening is inflammation is going on in their little bodies. (In both the ear infection and the eczema)
I know you are probably sick of things not working but if you can go to these two websites and check out them and e-mail me if you would like further information. The sites are www.mymangosteen.com/fruitsolution and the other one is www.insidemantosteen.com/health101 (personal stories)
I love this juice and there is science to back it up. God Bless you! and please e-mail me at ____@____.com if you have any questions!

Best of luck to you! From one Mom to another. About me, married with three sons and a daughter!

I think that the "Baby" sunscreen you are referring to is "Water Babies by Coppertone". My youngest had reactions to that as well, and for some reason she was ablet to use Ocean Potion's (Pink Bottle also) Baby sunscreen. Not sure if it will work for you, but it may be worth a try? Good luck!!

I would definitely call your ENT about the draining from your son's ear tubes, it sounds like they're infected. My daughter just had tubes put in a couple of months ago. They told us that normal post surgery draining should only last 3-5 days. When her ears were still draining after that they prescribed antibiotic ear drops and it cleared up in just a day or two (although we had to continue the drops for 10 days). You probably won't even have to take him in for an appointment, they prescribed the drops for us over the phone. Good luck.

Have you tried a product called Renew? Works great for us and our grandchildren.
Also is a non-toxic product that has even beat Eucerin!

(2) Keratosis - What type of Keratosis is it? If it's Keratosis Pilaris, I've had it forever, too, and finally found something that works from dermadoctor.com called "KP Duty." But I don't know that it would work for another type of Keratosis...they might have something else, though? Good luck!

My son had tubes placed in his ears approx. three months ago. He does have occassional drainage (brown/rust). We use ear wax removal drops to help "clean it up."

As to the Keratosis, try this link: www.helpforkp.com/keratosis_pilaris_treatment_index.html.

Good luck!

RE: Ear Tubes

My son had ear tubes put in when he was 10 months old and also continued to have disgusting draining. This is not normal. It means there is still an infection in his ears and he still needs drops. The drops clear things up pretty quick, thank god. Even with the tubes in, my son has still had 3 infections since then, but they were all short-lived since the antibiotic drops go straight to the infection. Your son is probably sleeping better because there is no more pressure... but any time they are draining like that, there is an infection.

Have you tried chiropractic?

I work PT at my chiro's office and they can do wonders for ear infections and basically any problem...asthma, allergies etc. Chiropractic isn't just for adults with back and neck pain. When there is a shift in the spine (called a subluxation), it causes pressure on the nerves connected to the spinal cord. This pressure interferes with the brains ability to communicate with the body and tell it to heal.

Our bodies have an innate intelligence to heal from the insdie out (if you cut your finger you don't bleed forever, right? Your body knows how to heal itself)

So...get both your little ones checked by a reputable chiropractor that works with children. I live in WI and would be happy to talk to you more if you'd like!

Both my boys have asthma and neither has used their inhaler, been on ANY meds, or used the nebulizer since starting chiropractic care over a year ago! It's a NATURAL way to keep our little ones healthy without putting a bunch of drugs in their little bodies:)

Have a great day!

I highly recommend Vanicream Sunscreen for ANY skin conditions.
http://www.amazon.com/Vanicream-Sunscreen-Sensitive-Skin-...
It's also available at most drugstores. There's a lotion, too, that for me has been amazing (but I don't have keratosis, just for the record).
Good luck!
