X Rays During Early Pregnancy

I just took a pregnancy test today and it came back positive. But on Friday I had a dental appt. and they did X_rays and put me on antibiotics and pain killers. + I am going to have to get the tooth pulled within the next couple of weeks. I had a miscarriage in October, so I am very scared! Could any of this affected me to carry? And what should I do?

What can I do next?

Congratulations!!!

I would also talk to your ob/gyn and see what he/she says about all of it.

congrats!!

first of all realize the side effect of not getting your teeth fixed while pregnant really outweighs getting them fixed--- I would call your ob/gyn and talk to him about the meds-as far as the x-rays I am pretty sure the dentist put a big heavy cover over your body while getting the x-rays--- that was to protect the rest of your body from the radiation. OK if you do not get this teeth taken care of soon the decay can harm your body thus harm the baby.
you best bet would be to relax and not fret over what the dentist does. when he does pull your tooth make sure he/she know that you are pregnant because here is other pain killers that is safer for the baby

Hi T.,
My name is V. and I work for a dental office. Did you tell the doctor that you are pregnant? The radiation in x-rays are very minimal but they still shouldn't take x-rays. You should be fine but I say you should stop taking the medication and talk to your ob/gyn before continuing. I know that it is not ok to have anesthesia administered while you are pregnant, but to be on the safe side, I say talk to your doctor, everything will be fine and don't worry.

Congratulations on your baby! And don't worry about the miscarriage. A lot of women have miscarriages and then go on to have healthy babies. I had one too.

My husband is an x-ray tech. He says don't worry about it because dental x-rays are a confined amount of radiation and probably didn't even make it to your baby. Tooth decay is way more harmful to a baby than x-rays or approved medication. Infections can travel to the baby through the umbilical cord, so you're much better off getting it taken care of.

Left untreated, you could be going through what I went through which was oral surgery to fix a route canal gone bad at 9 months pregnant. The surgery and pain before and after was worse than the 30 hours of labor and giving birth naturally. Get it taken care of soon!

If you're still on the medication your dentist gave you, call your OB/GYN to make sure it's approved for pregnant women.

Hi T.,

Congratulations!! I also had dental work done when I was pregnant. I asked my Ob/Gyn before hand and he let me know that just a standard cleaning was okay. My suggestion to you is to check with your Ob/Gyn to see what his/her guidelines are.

Thanks,

I.

Did they put the lead vest on you? I too had x-rays on my wrist before I knew, but I told them there might be a chance, also I am a vet tech and I took x-rays before I knew..My daughter came out perfect! I had no problems and my doctor said that she would be fine since I wasn't exposed to much.. I hope this helps to ease your mind.. But, I would ask your doctor. Your baby should be fine..Hope all goes well.. Take care..

I wouldn't worry about it. I was just reading about this online b/c I am 28 weeks preg and had severe pneumonia 4 weeks ago, and during that time I had two chest x-rays and one CT scan (which I wasn't thrilled about, but they felt the risks of not having them were greater). But I was reading that since the radiation wasn't pointed at the abdomen, the exposure to the fetus is very minimal. And since yours were all the way at your mouth, I'm sure all is fine. And my baby is still kicking and the heart is beating well And also, my OB said that the amount of radiation needed to harm the fetus is about 3 X's what I received. And you had no where near the x-rays I had. I still wish I hadn't had to have them though.

T.,

They should have put the lead apron on you during the x rays so you should be fine. As far as the antibiotics, call the pharmacist or the dentist that prescribed it to see if it's safe during first trimester. They do have antibiotics that are safe. Same for the pain killers. HOpe this helps.
