First year that my two girls can really get into the whole Christmas experience but really don't want to travel too far - does anyone have any great suggestions for around the HEB area (Arlington, Grapevine, Fort Worth OK - don't like to drive to Dallas by myself). During day preferred.
Also has anyone taken a 3yr old to see the Nutcracker. She LOVES ballet, but I'm worried she won't be able to sit through it all/ annoy other people who are there too. Any family friendly performances at local theaters??
Thanks for any suggestions!

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone for your responses - now the difficult decision on what to do! Will go to Grapevine Main Street - they have lots of decorations, Santa, and free carriage rides Fri, Sat, Sundays. Bass Pro has nice set-up with Santa - games, activities, etc and get free Santa photo! Can't decide on Hurst or Bedford Tree Lighting?? May check out Gaylord Texan (have heard it has lovely decorations), but ICE thing too expensive for us. Would love to do the Polar Express, but still too pricey this year :( May leave Nutcracker until next year when 3yr old will be 4 and may actually enjoy it more. That's probably enough for us - I'm sure doing all this will wear me out enough (LOL) and the kids will love it! Thanks :)

You can always look at the calendar for Fort Worth Child magazine (check it out online) for what interests you. What I have penciled in (especially with family and guests in town) that interest us are as follows: This Friday (11/27) is the downtown Ft Worth parade. It's free unless you pay for parking. There's a kidzone by the tree (center of Sundance Square, but I've never been to that) and then the parade starts in the evening. It's really big, lots of people, so get there early to stake a spot. We always bring a couple chairs and a big thermos of hot chocolate. My son just turned 3 and has loved it both years he's gone previously, and so do we. There's Thanksgiving in the Stockyards 11/28-29, which is free; there's face painting from 12:30-3:30, gunfights with The Legends of TX at 11:45 and 4:15, and a kids herd cowcamp 1:30-2:30. You can go to www.stockyardsstation.com about that. Carol of Lights in Grapevine is free, at the Main St Gazebo at 7pm on 11/30 though it isn't a real "event" as much as just happy atmosphere. Christmas on Main St in Grapevine is kinda nice on a pretty day though, and that's every weekend starting 11/27 and ending 12/20: it's free horse drawn troleleys, games, costumed characters, sometimes carolers, Santa is there, etc. Christmas in the stockyards is something we'll do this year, possibly catching a train and riding the train to add to the experience (from Grapevine to the stockyards). It's 12/5, free (not the train ride, but the stockyard day), from 1-6pm. It'll include the stockyard tree lighting, a parade, pony rides, cowboy santa, etc. Again, that would be www.stockyardsstation.com or ###-###-####. If you wanted to go to Keller instead, there's a breakfast with Santa for $10 (I think it's McDonalds food) at Keller Pointe on 12/5 from 8-12 and it'll have breakfast, facepainting, a craft, and then get to visit and take a picture with Santa and Mrs. Claus. the phone number to Keller Pointe is ###-###-#### and you have to register ahead of time for it. We will be going to see 101 Dalmations at the Artison Center Theater in Hurst for $5, every Sat from 11/28-12/19 at 10am. The phone number there is ###-###-####. We like that little theater for kids shows. There are lots of other shows going on around the area (Santa Claus is Coming to Town, A Christmas Carol, A Lonestar Christmas Carol, etc) but you'll have to go to the site I mentioned and look that info up. ICE at the Gaylord sounds neat and we may go to that...it's 11/23-1/3 but honestly I thought the Gaylord was kinda overrated last time we went by (but then, we didn't do ICE and I've heard good things about it). Kinda pricey for adults ($23) but free for little ones. I thought the Bison feeding hay ride sounded neat, but I'll have an infant with me, so that won't be one we get to do this year...I can just see me trying to climb into the back of a truck with a wee baby, lol. We went to the Bass for the Nutcracker last year and I really enjoyed the evening: went to the Reata for a nice dinner, then walked over to the Bass, then afterwards we got coffee at Barnes & Noble...a nice night. We didn't have kids, but I saw a lot and wasn't bothered by them. I think that'd just depend on how your children do sitting down for awhile. I second the idea of a matinee b/c it'd be more child friendly. There's a lot of options out there. Hope you find a few that are fun for you guys!

The city of Hurst usually has a very nice christmas tree lighting party early in December, check with the city website, they have Santa and some small events, petting zoo or pony rides, it is free and well done. I don't know what the agenda for this year is, but i know the person who is in charge if you can't find details email me and I'll get them for you.

go early, the line for Santa can get long, but worth it, it's a great Santa and Mrs Claus too!

I took my daughter to see the Nutcracker when she was about 3 and she loved it! It was a bit too long for her and she fell asleep before it was over, but she still has fond memories of it. Plan on going to a matinee because there will be more families with young ones there. There are several productions out there but we always went to the one at Bass Hall, then afterwards we went to Barnes & Noble next door and had hot chocolate.

Hi K.,
Try the ICE Exhibit at the Gaylord in Grapevine. It's a "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" theme. I believe it opens this weekend.

This Friday afternoon/evening there is a Christmas parade in Sundance Square followed by the lighting of the Christmas tree. The parade is supposed to have over 100 illuminated floats and of course Santa will be at the end...Santa even helps light the Christmas tree. The festivities starts at 2, the parade begins at 6 and the tree is lit at 7:30. Here is a link with more info - http://www.fortworthparadeoflights.org/
