What Do I Bring to Maui for My 8-Month-old Baby?

Not sure where you will be staying, but we went to Maui to visit friends when my daughter was about 1 1/2 and very mobile. I took some duct tape to cover up electric sockets and knobs so she wouldn't accidentally lock us out of the rooms, etc.

We also packed lots of fun things for her to do like bubbles and flash cards, pictures, etc. If you can, try to take familiar snacks and foods because babies don't always like new foods along with new places. I took our sound machine to help her sleep and not be awakened by strange noises. Oh, and hats and sunscreen!

I have used Akamai Mothers and would suggest getting in touch with them, it was so easy and it was really nice to have a real crib for our son (he was 6 months) - we all got better sleep. We also rented a high chair (we stayed in a condo), and were going to use a boppy from their consignment shop and then they would buy it back from us but we didn't end up doing that. Also, I would check out One Step Ahead (website). They make a great one piece sun protection suit (just like a swim suit) and it made me feel better to know that most of my son's body was safe from a lousy sunscreen application. They also had special ear plugs (I was still nursing so didn't use them at that age) that are supposed to help with the pressure change on take-off and landing, not too pricey, might be worth it. Lastly, you might try sunscreen wipes if you haven't before. We use them with our son and it is so much easier, less messy, faster, etc. Most importantly, you have to go to Makena (Big Beach) while there - it is the most beautiful beach, worth a little drive. My cousin went to Maui and said there is a fabulous service where you pay about $100 and they come to your condo/hotel room and set up a crib, highchair, leave a stroller, toys, etc. everything you could need. She said it was great and well worth the money. It was all set up when they arrived and they didn't have to worry aobut bringing everything.

My son is 9 mos old now and we are hoping to travel to Maui within the next 6 mos. My friend took her son at 5 mos of age and told me of this baby gear rental place in Maui. I haven't used it, but may be worth looking into!

The other item I would recommend is a sun tent to block UV rays.

We took our daughter to Maui when she was 8 months old and had an absolute blast. It's a great age to go because they're not fully mobile yet. Lots of hats, a sunshirt or two because your baby might not want to be slathered with sunscreen all the time. We found a really great little floaty vest which helped us feel confident with keeping her in the water and not having to completely hold her up all the time. Remember, most anything you will need, you can find there. Oh, and there is a beach that I believe is called kid's beach in Lahaina that is great to just wade out in. Very shallow and lots of coral so your daughter would be able to see some fish etc. Enjoy!
