She Doesn't Want Any Milk, but Breastmilk. What Do I Do?!

I want to wean my 12 mo.old, but she is just not interested in any kind of milk. I tried cows and soy (including vanilla), but she just doesn't want it. I am concerned that if I just stop nursing, she won't get the nutrition, as well as enough liquid to keep her hydrated. She drinks water, but little. Is it ok to just give her more of full fat dairy products (yogurt, cottage cheese)? Please share your experience!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you so much for responding! I feel much better now when I know she is not the only one who hates milk. I am just going to give her plenty of yogurt and cottage cheese as many of you recommended.

T. my little girl was the very same way! She to this day won't drink any kind of milk and I have tried every kind out there. (she is almost 6) My Pedi told me as long as she had yogurt and cheese she was good. She also eats edamame and her Dr. said that helps too. Good Luck!

Don't fret T., my daughter was the same too! She is now 17 months old and is still drinking half whole milk mixed with half formula. I wouldn't worry about it if she is eating other products which provide calcium like yogurt and cheeses. Just keep trying!

I have 5 chidren whom I nursed and never gave cow's milk. They went straight from the breast to juice and water. I still do not give any of my children milk except in cereal. They range in age from 5 to 14 years old. I am one of 7 children and none of us were ever given milk either. None of us have ever had a broken bone and we are all very healthy.

Hi T.,
My daughter, who just turned one last week, weaned herself 3 weeks ago. I was also worried because she wouldn't drink any regular milk and wouldn't touch formula either. My sister told me about a semi-formula for toddlers called Nido (it is in the Mexican food section of the grocery store) My daughter loves it. I give it to her every morning. It tastes pretty good and it is sweetened with honey. Give it a try it has worked for me!!

as my pediatrician put it the other day...I don't care if she ever drinks milk again in her life. She just needs to get about 500 mL's of calcium a day. That can come in the form of yogurt, cottage cheese, cheese, veggies, etc.
Have you tried giving her juice? My daughter likes that much better than water. If she becomes a juice addict than you can water it down so she gets enough water in her also.

Read the book: "Don't Drink Your Milk"

It is quite interesting that humans are the ONLY animal that continues to give their babies milk after weening.

Congrats on nursing for a full year! :-) I wouldn't worry ... only 1 of my kids is a milk drinker and mostly chocolate milk. The other 2 don't EVER drink plain milk .. the milk they get is in their cereal .. but they love yogurts and such .. so we stick with that. I don't think she'll become dehydrated .. just continue to offer her liquids and it should all work out. :-)

My youngest was that way - he refused to take a bottle - EVER! He went straight from nursing to a sippy with milk. He went on strike at first, but finally after 24 hours decided he was thirsty enough to drink milk. We haven't had a problem since. I know it's hard, but I finally had enough when he was 14 months old and I was 2 months pregnant!

I'm interested in hearing the responses you receive....as I'm battling this very same thing with my 14 month old. She's still nursing at least 4 times a day (never taken a bottle) and will only drink a little water or diluted juice from sippy cup. I've tried all types of milk, even adding strawberry flavoring.....and no luck. And it's not looking like she's wanting to wean any time soon.

Good luck!
