Sensory Processing Disorder - Phoenix,AZ

I have an 8 year old that has SPD. He has been through SI therapy and is currently doing the Listening Program. I also have SPD although I never had therapy. My son and I have some of the same issues and it amazes me the things he will do after having SI therapy that I would never in a million years consider doing; therapy has made a huge difference for him.

I am also an Occupational Therapist. I work in a school setting and have many kids at school that have SPD. Because of my background as an OT I realized my son had SPD when he was very little and worked hard to get him the help I knew he needed. It took about a year to get him SI therapy.

My son has this. He will be 4 in September. Thought it was autism for awhile, but when I could not get any evaluators or therapists to agree with me, I kept digging and realized this is what he has. He has been through therapy at a place called STAR here in colorado that specializes in sensory therapy. It was like paying a second mortgage though and we could not continue therapy though it was helpful during the time he was there. He is now in PT and ST and we are on a wait list for an OT (the same one he had at STAR moved to a childrens hospital near us! Yea!).

My daughter was just diagnosed with mild sensory processing disorder. She will be receiving OT and PT in the fall. I will message you :)

My son has very mild sensory issues but as a PT working in the schools, I have treated children with these issues. Unfortunately, SI (sensory integration) is the best type of therapy available and very expensive with few therapists (usually OTs) available to provide it. You don't say how old but generally mild cases are easier to handle than more involved cases. It also depends on the specific senses that are involved. Generally these children cannot filter the senses that are involved and tend to withdraw from that experience. You will have to modify his/her environment to some degree. You will also have to discuss his/her issues with the rest of the family so that a smoother transition can be made. Your school district should help with school issues (an IEP with modifications to his environment). Good luck.

My 4 year old grandson has it. He is violent and has no filter that tells him to not do impulses. He is hard to manage and is very bright and funny and wonderful the rest of the time.
