My 12 year old got her first period in June, they came every month on the 3rd of the month - perfect timing. Now in October nothing. Is this normal. I told her not to worry - that if it still doesn't come by November we might say something to a doctor but this is probably (can't remember) normal. The only thing she did differently in October is start on the schools soccer team. Ladies please let me know what you think.

Very normal. It takes about a year for things to regulate. Also keep in mind that increasing physical activity will usually adjust the menstrual cycle so she's doubly "out-of-whack".

Give it another couple of months and if there is still a concern call your OBGYN and ask.

Hi M. --

This is not uncommon as her hormones fluctuate during the first year or so. Next time you're at the Pediatrician you can mention it, but there's usually no need for concern.

Best of health,

First, not that I am saying this to be mean or hurtful, or saying anything durogatory about your daughter, but could she be pregnant. I am hoping that that is not a possibility, but it does happen now a days. And this is nothing that at her age we want to happen by any means. Second, when I first got my period they were far from regular. I got my first one and then didn't get another one for about 3 mos. I would call your doc and tell them what is going on. It may take a while for her body to regulate itself.

Hi M.,

All children are different - I'm sure you'll read this a hundred times - it is normal to not be regular for the first year or so. My oldest, now 18 took about 9 - 12 months to become "regular", some months she wouldnt get it at all, others for almost 2 weeks, other months just spotting for a couple days. My 2nd daughter, now 16, didnt get her period until just this past spring, after she turned 16. I told her to count that as a blessing.

Keep her close and keep communications open with her as much as you can. If you feel she is keeping secrets, and her period doesnt come in the next 2 months - take her to the gynocologist to have her checked out.

Good luck
