Hi -
How do I find out info on families who have lived in our home before us? I found an old photo in our closet base board that I believe may belong to the original owner. I think it would be nice to return it.

What can I do next?

I believe there are a few ways you could find out previous owners. One is if you bought your home from them then their name and info should be on some of the sale docs etc., go back into your records and look for their name and info. (If it was more than one owner ago look at the "title search" which should list previous owners-- confirming you now have good title/ownership)

Once you have their name, even if the address is wrong, you can "google" search and try to find a phone number or email for them.

If you can not come up with a name or other contact info by searching through ownership documents I would suggest going to the county of records and finding out previous owners this way (might be a bit more tedious or have some charge). I believe property owners are public record, even if not, a title search for your home would list all of its owners and the county records clerk should know how to get you the info you seek.

I hope these ideas help! Good luck!

PS- It is really nice of you to try to find the people to give them a picture back! God Bless you!

If you know a realtor or lender they can look up who owned your home two or three people ago. If not then you can call the city recorders office and have them do a check. I don't know if there is a fee for this though. The easiest way is to have a realtor check the tax records for the property. If you need help let me know, I'm a realtor with Century 21. Good luck.

Hi M.,

That's a really nice thing you're doing. Most people would just throw it away. You could ask a title company to run a searh but you should have all that information from when you purchased your home. Just look at your title report and it should list the "chain of title" somewhere in the report. This will give you a list of everyone who has owned that property. I'm in real estate so I have a lot of resourses if needed. Good luck.

Most people who have lived in a neighborhood for any length of time gets to know the neighbors, ask one of them if they have there new address, if not then stick it in an envolope with there name and your address if they place a forward mail with the post office it will forward the picture to them

Pretty smart huh

Hi M.,

That should be pretty easy as every deed has to be recorded in the Courthouse at the Recorder's office. Go there, show them your deed or have them look it up, then you find out who sold it to you. If it was not from the previous owner who sold the house to you, the picture could belong the that owner's previous owner, which can be backtracked. You can also first call the Property Recorder's Office and find out what they say. They definitely have ways of backtracking.
Good luck.
