Relocation Advice for Areas Surrounding Memphis

My husband is doing very well in his new job here in Memphis. We moved here in Sept., and have been currently residing with my husband's aunt. Now that things seem to be moving along nicely we are thinking about buying a house. I am from northern Indiana, so I am not at all familiar with the areas in this community. I have 3 girls, and am trying my hardest to give them a safe enviroment. I know that there has been new anexing in Shelby County, and I do not want my daughters going to Memphis City Schools. I know there are a lot of communities just out side of Memphis, like Cordova and Germantown, ect., so I am asking with a modest income what areas you all know are the safest, and have good schools. I don't want to buy a house some where, and then find out the school has serious issues with violence, and my kids can't play outside if you know what I mean.

What can I do next?

I home school my kids, but i do know that Riverdale is an excellent elementary school. It is in Germantown off of Neshoba. Any where around there would be a great neighborhood, safe, etc. Good luck!

Hi, my name is A. I'm from New Orleans LA. I live in Horn Lake MS about 20 minutes from memphis. I was working in Germantown, TN. You were asking about areas thats safest and have good schools. Horn Lake, Southaven, and Germantown are very nice places so raise your family. It is very quiet and no crime. Germantown is really nice but it is very high class and expensive. I'm learning a lot about Memphis but where I'm at now I love it. I have two kids and it is a good place to raise your family.

Olive Branch, MS. It is just below the stateline, literally. That is the exact reason I moved out of Shelby County for my kids education.

They are teaching on a curriculum that is equal to China, very advanced as opposed to Shelby County Schools. I know the high school has no tolerance outlook. If you break the rules you are suspended the first time. All the kids know that and they follow the rules. The schools are very structured.

If you are into activities for the school well so are all the other parents. School functions are packed.

Be careful to which side of OB you move though. If you move north of Goodman or West of Lamar (old 78) you will be in the new schools area. They are always looking for handouts, fund raisers constantly.

My children go to OB Middle, OB Elementary and Chickasaw. I wanted them to go to the school that was the most established and these are the original schools of OB.

Our neighborhood is great for families with kids. Magnolia Estates, Magnolia Lakes area. I have the perfect Real Estate Agent. My house was a done deal in a week and I was in there.

If you would like more info or a tour of OB send me a personnal email on here and we can exchange numbers.

I too work in Memphis and so does my fiance so we can tell him the best route to get to work if you moved down this way.

Later.

I would pick to live in Olive Branch, MS. We moved to Olive Branch about a year ago from Kansas City. We heard that the schools here are wonderful, so that was our main reason for picking the town. It is a community that is growing quickly too, and it is safe. I never worry about my safety. My husband works in Memphis and has a pretty quick commute.

Where in the city does your husband work?

Mississippi is a great place to live - cheaper everything! I live just seven miles from 55...am down town in less than 30 minutes...only ten minutes south of Memphis city limits. I love it - great schools...family are moving into DeSoto County every single day...I think 70??? It's really growing and has a wonderful family atmosphere from what I can see. I am new, also...lived here one year...but was hanging around for the three before. :) Modest income could live well in Horn Lake, Southaven and parts of Olive Branch...whichever would be closer to work.

What part of northern Indiana?? I came from Kankakee, IL - northern Illinois. I am very familiar with northern Indiana.

We just moved here in August too. We're renting in Bartlett for now. The housing here is not unreasonably priced imo and Bartlett has good schools. There are a ton of amenities and everything you could need here shoppingwise. I'm not terribly familiar with the whole area but I thought Cordova was annexed already or at least part of it. You can see what schools are part of MCS on their website. It's also my understanding that Bartlett can't be annexed and they have a huge undeveloped area for new homes/businesses. If we were in a position to buy another home right now I would also consider Arlington or Lakeland. Both are smaller communities with lots of room to grow as well. Good luck.

With a modest income, my husband and I have made it wonderful in Lakeland (south of 40, north of hwy 64) and in Bartlett. Germantown, Collierville have been known to be pricy. Most of Cordova, if not all is in the city limits. Be careful with Bartlett north of Brownsville Road.. some is iin the city limits.

Hi A.,
Welcome to Memphis. I just wanted to let you know about the area I live. I have lived in Memphis all my life and the area I live now is great. We have lots of children in our neighborhood. I have been in the same house for the past 10 years. We have a great neighbors. We live in Bartlett by the Quail Ridge golf course. When we were looking for a house we made sure we were not in the Memphis City School district. I am sure for the same reasons you don’t want to be. The schools that my son has gone to and is going to are Ellendale Elementary and now he goes to Appling Middle School. When he goes to high school we are zoned for Bolton High School. I have heard lots of good things about Bolton as well. There are several houses for sale in the area for sale if you want to come and take a look. I believe the prices are reasonable.
Good Luck and hope to meet you in the neighborhood.

A., depending on your income, I would recommend Millington, which is just north of Memphis, or Bartlett, which is to the east. Both are well supplied with schools (county), parks, Wal-Mart,other shopping, restaurants, libraries, etc. Bartlett is the larger of the two and is more upscale, and probably more expensive. I live in Raleigh, right between the two. My neighborhood isn't that great, so I spend a lot of time in the other two places. I hope this is of help, and let me know if you need more information. I also tandem breastfede both of my children, who are now 14 & 18. I am also a life-long Memphian--my family has been here over 100 years! I look foward to hearing from you. MaggieRose

I have a 16 month old and am already thinking about schools. I have heard Lakeland and Arlington schools are good. You also may want to consider moving to Tipton County; I have heard they have wonderful schools and it is really growing with nice communities. My sister is a real estate agent if you are interested. She works for Remax in Tipton County but can show you anywhere.

My husband & I live in Cordova and I feel very safe both in my home and in letting my children play in the neighborhood. There is a new subdivision being built at the end of our street. This area has not been annexed yet but is in a county school district. That is, every other house on the street except for our's. Our son goes to Cordova Middle school and we really like it. Try driving around and taking a look out here. Take Walnut Grove east to Germantown Parkway. Take a right on Germantown Parkway (you'll be near the Agricenter), take a left at the 2nd light onto Walnut Bend. Take the 1st right onto German Creek. Take a right at the end of German Creek and then a left onto Port Douglass. This will take you into the new subdivision but feel free to drive around all over and look at some of the older houses that are for sale too.

Happy Hunting!

There is a possiblity that my husband and I will be moving to Memphis in the near future. In doing some research, I have found Collierville to be a great place. Yes, it is a little pricy, but you are in Shelby County School District, which I hear is very good. According to their web site they were rated in the top 100 schools in Money Magazine. Also, according to Collierville's web site they too were rated in the top 100 places. Here is a link to what I have been able to find. Good luck.
