No worries about blow ups! For the most part, this is one of those "cover your behind" warnings intended for those with no common sense. Modern-day cookers have safety measures in place to drastically reduce such accidents. Regardless, just be sure to read the instruction booklet regarding how to release pressure safely so that you don't (a) steam burn yourself, which actually can be a more common injury and (b) just generally avoid block-head maneuvers (like blowing out foam, etc.).
As for recipes, you can basically convert any of your favorite recipes for the pressure cooker (some are obviously more suited than others). Check out http://www.missvickie.com/, which I found really helpful for me (no worries on her looking down on an electric cooker - I think she's just die-hard old school). Or, if your manual includes a couple of recipes, you can pretty much use those as guides on cooking times/settings for standard recipes that are simliar.
