Pregnant and Depressed . . . Anyone Else Been There?

I'm about 8 weeks pregnant with my second child. My first born just turned 2, and is definitely a handful to my husband and I right now. We have wanted to get pregnant again for almost a year, but had to wait to start trying until May. I was so excited when we found out!! But slowly and surely, I find I'm sinking. I've battled depression before, so I know the signs. I was on antidepressants at one point, and my ob told me when I got pregnant there was still a type I could take, but I just am not comfortable taking anything that might harm my baby. I know they are definitely a no no while nursing, so that's something to consider as well, since I plan to. I just hate feeling like this . . . I'm so tired and apathetic, and I have a hard time getting the energy to even play with my son, much less clean the house.

Is this possibly just pregnancy hormones? Is there a chance it will pass? Any suggestions? Has anyone else gone through this?

Hi
I hope you start feeling better soon. I felt the same way with #2. I think it was just pure exhaustion from chasing a toddler while surviving the first trimester. I would also have your doctor check your thyroid, as it can effect mood, energy, etc
Good luck

Actually J., Zoloft or Prozac can be used while pregnant or breastfeeding. You kind of have to outweigh the risks and the benefits. Pregnancy and delivery hormones can make you feel more depressed than usual and with your history of depression, you are more prone to feelings of depression.

this site talks about breastfeeding and antidepressants:

I know how overwhelming raising a family can be. With this current pregnancy I did have feelings wanting to be isolated or just not wanting to do the things I needed to do for my family in the 1st trimester. My husband has major depression with bipolar disorder, so it is something that our whole family lives with everyday as well.

If it's something you think you can manage without medication, then good. Are you going to a therapist? It seems like psychiatrists as well as patients are more eager to try a pill than to try psychotherapy. My husband and I feel that they go hand in hand. And personally, I think there are probably more people that can actually do with just the psychotherapy alone. Of course it depends on the chemical balances in each individual.

If you need someone to talk to, let me know. Hope this was helpful.

I'm 24 years old and I'm pregnant with my first. I have been battling depression and anxiety since I was a young teenager. I was put on Prozac about a year 1/2 ago. My doctor tells me that prozac is ok for pregnancy. My depression gets to the point where I feel hopeless and I don't want to go on any longer. If you are getting to that point, you may want to consider going back on a medication. There are some that are safe, and you might feel like you can cope with the hormonal changes and the craziness around you. Take care and good luck!

Oh it's totally possible it's pregnancy hormones. I'm pregnant with my second. My first is 23 months. I'm exhausted all the time. My motivation only came back in my second trimester, and it's less motivation than I had before. I had a really hard first trimester. We have toddlers. We don't get to rest, sit down, focus on ourselves like the first one. We just end up feeling burnt out, kind of fat, don't relate to this pregnancy like the first due to lack of time, etc. Well, that's how I felt anyway. I bounced back at about 14 weeks. I just woke up and had more energy.

I wouldn't be too worried about taking some sort of antidepressant. You said yourself, you know the signs and you've been there before. I understand not wanting to take them for the sake of the baby but you have another baby to worry about. If it's a bit more than you can chew at the moment take antidepressants. They are very careful with what you can and can't have these days and if this medicine has been ok'd, I wouldn't worry too much about it. You could also meet with a homeopathic doctor and see what they have. The only problem with that is that homeopathic medicine hasn't been checked as much as the regular stuff. You have a lot of pressure on you right now, from taking care of a toddle, creating life, and taking care of your home. It's ok if you need a little help.
