My 3 year old daughter is very bright and even communicates very well, but this makes it more difficult to get her to poop in the potty... She has the peeing down pat and I really can't remember what my oldest daughter did and how she progressed... My 3 year old is very persistent about not pooping in the potty she goes all day in "big girl underwear" not having a single problem... she's been waiting until night time until she gets her pull up on for bedtime to "poop". She's even coming to me asking for the pull ups becasue she has to go--- they used to be within reach and she would just put one on herself- we've since put them out of reach,,, The obvious thing is to not give her the pull up but then I don't want her to hold it for so long causing bigger problems and it also upsets her very much to try to sit on the potty to do it.. Keep in mind peeing is NOT a problem at all! i know other children have been through the same thing, but I've tried every bribe ... everything I can think of to get her to use the potty the things that worked for the peeing are not working now- any other suggestions out there will be GREATLY appreciated!

What can I do next?

I have no personal advise for you. My 3 yr. old son wants nothing to do with the potty for pee or poop!! I've tried everything and nothing works. But a friend of mine had the same problem, her daughter would go pee everytime but would come & ask for a pull-up when she needed to poop. At Christmas time she told her daughter that Santa took all the pull-ups and that she would have to go to the potty. It worked fine for her. Worth a shot!

I'm sorry I do not have any advice for you. I have not had to potty train yet. But I wanted to let you know you are not alone. A friend of mine is having the same problem with her 3 year old. So I am also curious to see if anyone can help.

Well, with our daughter, she would refuse to poop in the potty and would ask for a pull-up to go or wait until nap or bedtime. Like you, we quit allowing it. We brought the potty into the living room and put it in front of the TV. We let her run around naked so she could just sit on it if she needed to. Well, one day, we were watching a movie she really liked and she sat on her potty to watch and just surprised herself by going. Since then, she'll only go poop on the potty unprompted. She makes the decision to go, but she does a great job. She has accident here and there, usually while coloring, but that's bound to happen. We've let her take control. Also, she gets a treat after going. That has really helped, too. I hope this helps.

Potty training does take time. You can try and try to train your children to use the potty (secretly hoping they'll learn quickly so we no longer have to buy diapers) Until one day a light bulb comes on after we think they'll never 'get it'
What worked for my kids is taking them everytime I went, and when they poo-pooed in the pull-up, put the poo poo in the potty so they'll see that's where it's supposed to go. Potty training is hard. Good luck!

I see that you and I are in the same boat. My daughter turns 3 one week from tomorrow. She does great with peeing in the potty. Still has the occasional accident but does great most of the time. I use pull-ups for nighttime just in case. But she refuses to poop in the potty because it's nasty. I've tried making her understand that poop GOES in the potty & it's more nasty & hurts her bum if she goes in her pants/pull-up.

If you find anything that works. Let me know!

We had the same problem with my son...by chance we took him to a free hour of Little Gym and then explained that he'd get to do that when he was completely potty trained. He would do well for a few weeks and then have a fall back and we'd remind him that Little Gym says he has to be completely potty trained before he can join them for fun. Well, by the fall he was all set. It worked. It's a thought. First trial period for one hour is free! It won't be much longer for her. Best of luck.

Whew, that was me EXACTLY. My little girl did the same thing, and would come and request a diaper so she could poop (I kept diapers for this reason). You are wise to give her the pull-up when she asks for one. My daughter would "hold out" for a diaper, and that did in fact lead to "bigger problems."

We tried every single thing we could think of. The only thing that worked was telling her that we would take her to get ice cream whenever she pooped in the potty. We told her this constantly, and finally, she asked to go poop in the potty. Then we took her for ice cream- at 8:30 at night! She went another week of asking for a diaper, then tried the potty again, and we again went for ice cream. It took a month or so, and we ate a LOT of ice cream, but it worked. I was worried that it would be hard to ween her off the ice cream reward, but she handled it fine. She would still say "Now we get to go get ice cream!" but she didn't notice that we never did anymore.

Good luck!

I went through this same thing with my daughter when she was three (she is now four and a half). Best advice I was given was to back off. Right now, it has become a power struggle between the two of you. She can control that, and for whatever reason, she is. My daughter got so bad that she ended up constipated and with urinary reflux. One day she just woke up and it was over - she's been going poop and pee on the potty ever since with no accidents. It'll come, just be patient with her, lots of encouragement and praise when she pees, but let it go about the poop. She'll do it when she's ready....
