hello everyone! I seem to be having some potty training issues. Something new right? HA HA! Well anyway my son is 2 1/2 and I have been working with him since about age 2 with the potty. He really likes it. He enjoys sitting and going pee on the potty. However I can't seem to keep him dry. He never tells me when he has to go either. I take him to the potty about every hour, and he likes it, he really does. But he is still peeing in between that. He does drink alot of water, but I know that is good for him so I don't want to decrease that. I have tried to buy him specail underwear, and he was really excited about that, but he seems to think that it isn't a big deal to pee on them. (and yes I tried to explain to him that it was a big deal) I never yell at him or get mad either. I more or less take the approch of "Oh no! what happend" and he knows because he says "uh-oh, pee pee!" and then I say "Where do we go pee pee?" and he says "On the potty" I have also tired "training" underwear, and just dealt with him peeing on them. but that seems to do nothing too.
Another thing, he will NOT go poo on the potty. I know that this isn't that un-commen, but I don't know how to get him to go. He seems to be more aware of the poo then the pee. He hides when he has to go, and if I catch him I take him to the potty, but then he just holds it in. Sometimes he gets constapaited, and I know all that is going to do is make him hate it even more. But I really don't know what to do. I know all these things can be normal but I really would like to get him potty trainied. I know all kids do it in their own time, but we seem to have stalled. any ideas???

I also have a 7 year old daughter, I never seemed to have these problems with her. But yeah she is a girl, so maybe it is true that girls train faster then boys...who knows.

What can I do next?

Have you tried chocolate? The mini ones? we kept them in the bathroom and everytime my husband and I went, we said, good mommy, good daddy, and we took a chocolat. we kept it out of reach of my son so this was before he even was potty trained. He was ready but wouldn't go on the potty. After a couple of days of us eating chocolates for going potty (husband and I) my son got so frusterated he sat on the potty and peed and said "good boy, chocolate"? so after that every time we kept reminding him, "do you have to go potty"? and he would remember the chocolate and go potty. We only gave him one if he went potty. Was a great incentive, someone else told me about it. We only needed to use them for about a month and then "good boy" was sufficient. Now he goes totally on his own and hardly ever has accidents.
Oh and my son took a bit longer to poop too...what I did is I had to put him on the big toilet and let his bum hang down a bit. I put a step stool there too. He talks to himself too...he says "just relax...let it out" He has a school that he goes to, they help him with it. Boys seem attached to their poo for some reason.

You might not want to hear this, but just give him more time. There is no way to get a kid to be potty-trained until they're really ready- both mentally and physically. It sounds like you're little guy isn't ready yet. My advice to you is to give the potty-training a break, maybe a couple of weeks and then come back to it. My son was fully trained about 3 months before his 3rd birthday and I can tell you that no matter what I tried prior to this time, nothing worked because he hadn't made up his mind that he was ready.

Ask any pediatrician and they will tell you that many boys aren't fully trained until they are about 3 1/2 years old. I'm not saying that this will be the case with your son, but just know that he's not behind schedule. I remember how frustrating it can be, but hang in there and be patient. It will happen!

I suggest just relaxing with the potty training for a while. Try pull-ups for a bit--he can still pee through them but not as bad as underwear.

As for pooping, my just-turned-3 yr old still asks for a diaper to poop in. I let him do it his way. When he's ready to poop in the toilet, we'll move forward. I feel he wants to control some things and maybe this is also a way of his control over not growing up too quickly (sometimes he says he wants me to hold him like he's a baby). I can live with it. After all, everyone assures me he'll be out of diapers before kindergarten!! ; )

One more thing simply as an FYI, there IS such a thing as too much water. People die from it on occasion but usually it's because they're working/playing in the extreme heat and drinking too much water for their bodies to process. I have NOT heard this in regards to toddlers but just wanted to mention it since summer is here.

I'm not saying your son is getting too much, but if he's peeing on the potty every hour AND peeing in between, maybe he's getting too much liquid. I'd talk to his doc about how much is sufficient for his body. If he's filling up on water, he may not be hungry for meals.

Hope this helps.

Each child gets the ability to know when they need to go at different times. He is aware that he is peeing, but that ability to feel the "urge" ahead of time may not be developed yet. I will repeat my mother's wise and fun words to my sister when her one son was late to potty train, "Look out the window and see all the people walking down the street. They all are potty trained, and your child will be too someday."

Little boys are all different, but in general potty train slower than girls. This is becasue the the muslce control isn't really there and the sensations are different. He may just not be physically ready, since it seems he understands the concepts. Also, if he consipated at all, he probably won't poop on the potty, give him lots of fruit and fruit juice to help that. It is completely normal for little boys not to poop in the potty until they regularly pee in it, which seems weird since they are so much more aware of needed to have a bowel movement, but it is a little scary, it's seen as lossing a piece of themselves. Sorry this isn't more helpful, but sometimes you just have to wait it out.
