PCOS & Metformin-How Long Will It Take?

Hey ladies! I took Metformin and Injectable fertility meds to conceive my second son. If, and when, I decide to have a third, I only want to do the Metformin for awhile before possibly taking oral fertility meds. Anyhow, if you have taken Metformin for your PCOS, how long did it take you to get pregnant? I hope to go drastic and follow a strict diet. I am not the typical PCOS patient, so there isn't much I can do to help myself other than alter my diet. Thanks! I am just curious about it.

What can I do next?

I went through 2 misscariages before anyone said PCOS. When I finally got the diagnoses my doc put me on metformin. I was pregnant within 6 months and have a healthy baby girl. I got on it again to help with some of my symptoms and got pregnant in 4 months. Surprise baby. Good luck to you.

I wouldn't take Metformin - my OB/GYN and my enchronologist did NOT like the possibility of damaging my pancreas and give me full on diabetes...

We use Chlomid and did NOT get pregnant after taking it for 2x at 6 months each..

I would seek out the advice of an endochronologist to help you with this personally...

After appropriate DX of PCOS--I conceived both of my children within 2 months of taking Metformin (500mg twice a day extended release) I didn't lose any weight in those two months of ttc and I stayed on that same dosage the whole pregnancy with healthy babies born at full term and no gestational diabetes.(I didn't ovulate til CD 31 for both pregnancies with the Metformin, so you really have to know your cycle to know if you are having intercourse at the right time and not just around the typical middle cycle of CD 10-18) I had one miscarriage between pregnancies and I was NOT taking the Metformin at that time. I've been on Metformin the last 3 months as we are about to begin trying for #3---once again, I haven't lost any weight with the Metformin....but I plan on staying on it again if we do fall pregnant---my new OB says to stay on it through week 13, but she's OK if I stay on it the whole pregnancy like I did for my other 2 babies! Good Luck to you.
PS--you might start it slowly like 500 for a week and then 1000 the second week because of GI side effects---but I didn't have any side effects.
Hope this helps!

The first time I took it for 3 months, but not the 3 times a day. More like 1-2 a day and bam, I was pregnant with miracle baby #1. I had no real faith in it working. I'd been TTC for 6 years, seen 3 other doctors, 2 that were specialists and happened to pick a new OB to have a physical done so I could adopt. She mentioned PCOS (the first I'd heard of it) and refused to put me on the pill (I was giving up) and said to try it. If anything, I would lose some weight. I called 3 months later to ask to be put on the pill and she wanted to see me in person to see how the metformin was working. 2 weeks later my pregnancy test was positive. So were the other 5 tests that I took that week in disbelief. :)

It took me almost a year of trying for miracle baby #2 with metformin. I was also going through a very stressful time in my life and didn't think it would happen again. It did. :) Best of luck to you!!! Many do not understand the struggles to conceive those precious babies.

I have PCOS and was given Metformin when we started fertility treatments with shots (not with Clomid). After 2 miscarriages we tried IVF and it took the first time :) I am a size 0 or 2 depending, very healthy, active woman and not a typical PCOS patient either. I was told by my specialist AND my primary doctor that I will Metformin will be a maintenance medication for a lifetime, unless I have a hysterecotomy (sp!). I have been on 500 2x's a day for the last 4 years. Not sure if this helps, but I am curious that I am on it for maintenance and your dr's are advising you to use it only conception. Perhaps I need to seek a second opinion about this!

I have PCOS and have been trying to get pregnant for 3 years. I just finished my 5th month on Clomid. I also found out in February that I had a hypothyroid. I just saw my doctor yesterday and next month I am going to have a dye test done and Start taking Metformin. She is hopeful that it will work, but she warned me that it can take 8 weeks to six months to properly adjust to it. I have done an unbelievable amount of research on Metformin and some women get pregnant right away, some it takes a few months, and others it takes years. I know that it isn't much of an answer, but stay hopeful and on top of your health. 30 minutes of walking 3 times a week did wonders for me. How long did it take for you to conceive your son? That might give you a better time line of how your body works, but since you used fertility meds with the metformin it is really hard to tell. Baby dust to you when you decide to have your third :)
