My son will be turning two at the end of july, I was wanting to know what you think of just having ice cream and cake and maybe a few snacks, or is it rude not to feed lunch. I will be having both sides of the family and a few of our friends, Also there will be some older kids there(between 5-9yrs.)What can I do so they wont get bored that involves my son! Any ideas would be great!!! Thank You

What can I do next?

I am going through the same thing as yourself. My daughter will be 2 in August and all I am going to do is have some finger foods (a couple sub sandwiches and chips / dip), cake and ice cream. I am not going to go all out. Because I want to be able to enjoy the birthday party of my daughter. My theory is that if that anyone doesn't like it, they don't have to be there. I am not going to take away time from my daughter to satisfy everyone else.

As far as the older kids, I had saw this website somewhere: http://www.kidsdomain.com/holiday/birthday/party.html
Hope this helps.

For my son's 1st bday party (he is almost 16 months now) I made sure to jkeep it simple and not very structured. The party went great, the adults mingled, the kids (ranged in age from 1-10)kept themselves occupied, and the birthday boy had a great time jsut being around everyone. I'll probably do the same for his two year birthday as well. I don;t hink I'll plan activities fro the children until my son is a little older and can actually be invloved in them. As far as the food goes, my sister and I have always had this "party food rule" that had to do with the time of the party. If we started our party between 11 and 1 we served lunch, if we started it around 4 or later, we served dinner, but inbetween times were finger food parties. That rule seems to have worked for us, at least no one has complained they didn;t get fed anyway! I'll usually do a couple sub sandwiches sliced up on a platter, just incase someone isn;t familiar with "thr food rule" haha...

My son turned two in November and I did not serve lunch I had a few snack items like cheese and crackers, chips and dip nothing big. My sister always has a sit down dinner and by the time we get to open presents we are all bored and ready to leave. Keep it quick and simple. We did the pull string pinata and all of the kids loved it (1-12 yrs old). Since it is summer tell kids to bring swim suits and put out the sprinkler. Hope this helps!!

As a rule of thumb, I figure meals are not going to be served if a party doesn't start at a meal time. I figure if I get an invitation for a party starting at 1-2 pm that I should feed the kids lunch first. Most of the time if the parents aren't sure they will ask. As far as entertaining a wide age range you can get creative with that. If you will be outside, water balloons or sprinklers can be fun. My daughter had a party with 3-10 year olds and they did some dancing which was fun. Some people get those jumpy things too, but I have never done anything that fancy. Hope that helps.

We did a barnyard theme for my daughters two year party with cake and ice cream. The party was at three in the afternoon so we didn't feel the need to offer a meal. We simply did plain red no fuss decorations and played with the outdoor toys on the porch and deck (ie wagon, balls and bubbles). My mom always said suit yourself ~ so I agree with the other response. Do what makes you and your child happy its his party!

For my daughter's 2nd birthday, we had a local fire engine come to the house to do a demonstration. They basically handed out kid fire hats, talked about the truck and what they do, then let the kids crawl through the truck. We had kids from 1-8 that seemed to think it was pretty neat, including the parents.

I just had this problem in April. I have a 2 and 9 year old. The 9 year old invited a few friends to the birthday celebration for the 2 year old. We had chips/dip and M&M's to snack on.
The games we played in April(not warm enough to be outside) which were entertaining to both age groups were balloon volleyball and catch the bubble. For catch the bubble you blow bubbles and the younger ones tried to pop them before the older ones caught them without popping. We also played freeze dancing where you dance until the music stops and everyone has to try to land in a funny pose.
