I have a wonderful 5 month old but i am now 2 weeks late! I am still breastfeeding and was wondering if breastfeeding can cause your periods to be erratic? I have taken 2 pregnancy test and they came back negative (1st at 2 days late and the last one at 9 days late). Just yesterday was the first day that I experience nausea and I have been cramping for 3 weeks now. I cant use my breast as indicators of pregnancy because they are working on feeding my little girl. But I have started leaking 3 days ago, which I have not done at all. Please offer any advice or experiences similiar to mine. Thank you!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

As suggested, I went to the Dr and got a blood test and it came back negative. I am so very thankful for your advice and encouragement that I am not the only one that this has happened to.

Have an amazing day and keep offering advice to all of the mamas in the community. We all need it!

Breastfeeding can definitely delay or disrupt your periods. I didn't get mine until about 13 or 14 months after my son was born. I know others who got theirs much much earlier. Everyone is different and you can get pregnant even if your are breastfeeding so if you're trying to avoid that, talk to you Dr.

The answer to both questions is yes. You could very well be pregnant if the only form of birth control you are using is breastfeeding. If conditions are right I know of someone who got pregnant while taking the minipill and breastfeeding. You definately need to check. The other answer is yes, your cycles are regular but due to the suppressed estrogen levels you don't necessarily menstruate monthly. Some ladies spot, and many don't do anything at all, however we do ovulate so again pregnancy is possible we just don't know when.

I am not sure if this is helpful, but good luck to you and if you don't want to get pregnant please see your Dr.

My sister had 3 of her children all thirteen months apart, and she was breast feeding. So it is possible. You may be able to notice some changes in your childs eating habits. Some children notice changes in the taste of the milk when their mother gets pregnant. One of mine almost stopped nursing completly when I got pregnant with my second. As to why the tests would come back negative, that I am not sure of.

I know breastfeeding definitely can make your periods erratic, so if its late and you're getting negatives on your tests, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Yes you could. My sister in law got pregnant when her boy was 3 months and I got pregnant when my daughter was 6 months...

My first 2 tests were negative... I waited nealy a month for the third... but I recomend having a blood test at your doctor's.

Best Wishes!

It is a toss up. I think the only way to know for sure if your are pregnant is to go to the doctor. You could most definatly be pregnant, but at the same time breastfeeding could just be throwing you off. I have a friend who was breastfeeding when she got pregnant with her second. The first 3 tests she took were negative.

When I was nursing my son, I had a couple of "silent periods" because of the "nursing" birthcontrol I was on. My doc told me it was normal. Just call your doc and see what she/he says. If you are still worried, then call your doc and have a blood test done to find out for sure. I hope my advice helped. Good Luck :)

Some women stop their cycyles completly while breastfeeding. If you are really concerned call your doctor. If you aren't wanting to get preganant anytime soon I would talk to you dr. about either the mini-pill or iud. Both safe for breastfeeding. I personally have the iud.

I didn't start my period until my son was about 14 months, and I got pregnant right around the same time. (I also had a negative pregnancy test, but took one again a couple weeks later and it was positive).
