My 2Yr Old Is Having Surgery.....

My two year old boy is having surgery on 5/22/08 to unclog his tear ducts. They have been that way since he was 2 weeks old. It is only a problem when he is sick because his eyes get infected and have puss coming out of them, but when he is well they are just watery sometimes and have to be pressed on to release the tears. The doctor is going to probe the tear ducts on both eyes to clear the blockage.

I just wanted to know if anyone has had experience with this kind of surgery and what the results were??

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

5/21/08 Luke's surgery is being rescheduled because the strep culture that the Dr. did yesterday at the pre-op came back positive so the surgery can't be done tomorrow. I will let everyone know when it is rescheduled for when I find out. I had myself emotionally ready for it....and that took a while!!! I guess I will have to go through all that again.....the comments from everyone REALLY HELPED ME A LOT!! Thank you to everyone for your advice, comments, and prayers!! It really means a lot..... I will keep in touch.

Thanks,

J. P.

Hi J.,

I do not have any experience with this and I don't know any one who has, but I do have friends whose children had to get tubes. I may actually wind up being one of them, my youngest gets chronic ear infections. Anyhow, I don't have any real advice except to be strong when he comes out of anesthesia. I went with a friend when her daughter got tubes and it was awful when she came to. She was very scared and wailed for quite some time.

Good luck to you!!!!

Hi there. I dont have any advice to give but Id like to say "good luck". Im sure youre feeling anxious - I would be too. Did you check out the surgeons background/ That is, how many surgeries of this kind theyve performed and what the outcome was? Im sure knowing about their track record would help reassure you somewhat.

J., my 21 mo had this done 2 weeks ago. we were at the hospital for only 2 hours and the procedure took only 30 min. You walk him back and hold him while they put a mask over him to put him to sleep, and then you leave. They carried him to us 30 min later and he was groggy but awake. We took him home and he ate and slept all afternoon. Feel free to contact me if you want to know more.

Hi J.,

Have you thought about taking your child to have lymph drainage?

Call Emily Wells at Wells Therapeutics and ask her if it helps to do lymph drainage for tear ducts that are closed.

Hope this helps. D.

Our son had it & everything went well. the procedure was quick, maybe only 10 minutes. It's normal to worry, but everything will be fine.

J.,

When my son was 18 months old he went in for tubal surgury on his ears. I know how nerve racking it is to face a surgury on your child. With my son they had me walk him into the operating room and set him on the table, then they put the mask on his face to put him to sleep, this was the worst part. One second he was thrashing around, then his eyes rolled into the back of his head and he was out. My heart sank. I had to stand the for what seemed like forever before he took a breath (in reality it was only a few seconds). It was the most unnerving thing to watch your child pass out like that. He was fine and tolerated the surgury very well. Up and playing the very next day. Kids are resiliant and recover fast. I'm sure he will be fine. My son had a second surgury and that went better because they gave him something to make him sleepy before going into the operating room. Coming out of anestesia was another story. He was very restless and unconsolable. Not really crying, but whining and pulling away from everyone. I had to hold him for about a 1/2 hour before he knew it was me and calmed down enough to drink something so he could go home.

I'm sure all will be well, and I will pray for him.
Good Luck

Hi J.. My daughter, now 21 months, recently had two surgeries to correct the same problem. Hers were constantly pussy for her first 19 months. The first was a probing to open the duct, which ended up not working. The second, they placed a stint in the tear duct that will stay for 3 months to help the duct "grow" open. It's been a month since her second procedure and her eyes are crystal clear!

Both procedures took less than 45 minutes to complete. The hardest part was putting her under anesthesia but that was also very quick (less than a minute). Recovery was also amazingly fast. She was discharged within 3 hours and back to normal within 6. It was amazing to me that she had surgery in the morning and was home running around with clear eyes by evening. The only side affect I noticed from the second procedure was a bloody nose, a lot of blood!, but nothing from the first. If your son is having the probing try to put your mind at ease. It is a fast procedure with very little side effects or down time. Even the stint placement was a lot easier than I though it would be and she doesn't seem to know it's there. It is visible in the corner of her eye.

I hope this works for your son. Good luck and best wishes.

My sister had this type of surgery done when she was about 6 years old. The doctor inserted a super-thin tube into her tear duct, and to this day it's still there. She's now 31 and just fine.

Her tear duct would constantly be clogged and mucky. Drops, presses, medications.... nothing worked. Her surgery didn't take that long, and her recovery was very quick.

Hi J.,

My neice had this surgery done when she was two also. She is now 8. She recovered almost immediately and is doing well. I think it may have been a procedure that was similar to an out-patient process. She only spent a couple of hours in recovery and was home the next day.

Good Luck!
