I would like to find some local area things to do with my kids (age 5,6,7,8) that we could all enjoy on the weekends. Plays, Music in the Park, community/family oriented things. Not sure if anything like this is out there - we avoid the strip as much as humanly possible...Have already checked out Redrock, Mt Charleston, Boulder City, etc. We really need some ideas that are inexpensive and fun!!

So What Happened?

Thank you all so much for the great response. I just checked my e-mail this morning, so I just now recieved all your great ideas!! Funny thing too, Sat morning got up and ready to head out and I remembered Tule Springs (hadn't been there in years) so we packed up the car with goodies (and kids too, lol) headed out there around 10:30 and stayed and played all day!!! it was beautiful. Felt so much like we were out of the city that the kids didn't know what to do at first without a playground or other manmade equipment to stiefel their imaginations; Not that playgrounds aren't a great opportunity for exercise and burn off energy, but it's kinda like eating the same thing for dinner every night - get's old after awhile. Anyway, it didn't take long for them all to start exploring and we all had a (much needed) break-away day in the outdoors.
Again, thank you all so much and if you have any more ideas that you would like to share (including, not so Vegas, date night as well) I would love to hear from you again.

God Bless,
A.

Our grandchildren loves the Library here in Las Vegas!! We go to the one at Jones and Sahara Streets. Jones is even on Sundays. You can borrow CDs, DVDs and everything is free. Just an idea that works for us.

There is the Desert Breeze on Spring Mountain that also has an indoor pool. Very inexpensive to join.

Vegas is perfectly fine for us. We seem to have fun every weekend. When you say you have checked out Redrock, Mt. Charleston, & BC, what are you doing ~ driving by? You have to hike the trails, go into the visiter center and learn why those trails are there, who was there in previous years. There is a lot of history here, if you are interested.

It is real easy to not like it here, if you want to.

Try:

Spring Mtn Ranch ~ take the tour inside the house & up the trail
Spring Mtn Ranch ~ back at the Ash Grove (the Rangers will help you find it)
Bonnie Springs ~ petting zoo, horse back riding, ghost town
Bonnie Springs ~ concerts and plays
Red Rock ~ Many trails at different levels
JR Pony Parties ~ pony rides and petting zoo) (Kid camp available)
San Genero Festival ~ every May and September
County Fair ~ Every April in Overton (Includes small rodeo)
Opportunity Village Magical Forest ~ Every Nov - Dec
Mt. Charleston trail hikes
Mt. Charleston winter snow sledding
Polar Express available in Williams AZ and Ely NV (3.5 drive)
Pumpkin Patches all over town in October
Plenty of discount movie opportunities
Calico Basin hikes
Calico Basin (Red Springs Park) concerts
Floyd Lamb Park (Tule Springs) historical park
Clark County Museum
PBR in November
NFR in December
Plenty of book store story time opportunities (Never Ending Story, Borders, Library)

Apex for dirtbike and ATV riding (If you don't own them rent them)
http://www.accessclarkcounty.com/depts/parks/Pages/home_p... ~ look into summer events at the Government Center $7 concerts, free plays, etc

I hope that helps.

I recently took my kids to the Springs Preserve and loved it. I think their yearly pass is $75 for a family. It was $50 for us for one visit so a family pass would definitely be a more cost effective way to go. They have a playground, hiking paths, a visitor center, all sorts of exhibits. It was very cool.

Dear A.:

How sad to leave San Diego! I still haven't gotten over it myself! Well, you're going to have to find a "different" kind of fun. Yes, there are those things which were mentioned but how often can you do the same four or five things? We have found fun in less "spectator-ish" arenas and more "participatory" ones.

For example, during the fall and winter, enjoy the terrific bike trails around town. Frisbee at the park, set up easels and sketch or watercolor. Drive south into the middle of nowhere with your telescope, blankets and a picnic and enjoy the stars, the quiet and a cuddly dinner in the car. Go bug hunting, set up targets and shoot arrows, pursue a sport, etc.

The other form of entertainment which our kids love is hanging out with friends...no, not running around outside unsupervised, we hang out as families together and cook at different homes, play board games 'til all hours, do group chats online with friends far away, participate in events at church, take classes together, etc. Have a potluck at the park and let the kids skate until dusk...

It helps that we're homeschoolers because then we have the time to form these relationships but you can do this on the weekends too...why not? We offer sewing classes in our home or piano or whatever and relationships start. Next month, a group of us are going to Legoland. It's much more fun to do real things with a terrific group of friends you can later share the memories with.

Best wishes to you!

Vegas can be a tough place to find inexpensive family friendly activities. I know you mentioned some of the major recreation areas, but have you been to Valley of Fire, Eldorado Canyon or Bonnie Springs? Beyond that have you checked-out VegasParent.com they have a calendar of events that usually has the various local events and community activities.
