Home Made Formula for Infant...

Hi H.,

When my son was a baby I made my own formula as he would get sick drinking any of the formulas from the store.
I did not have enough breast milk that is why I made my own.I used the carnation cream in a can 1 part cream 3 parts water and a teaspoon of karo syrup. Never had a problem after that.
I have helped other mothers with this problem and found putting them on lactoferrin helped them. I did not know this 27 years ago. My mother-in-law made her formula for all three of her kids. I don't know what recipe she used but she had great success. I'll ask her and email you. Sorry to hear about your problems, have you tried renting a breastpump from the hospital? Even if your darling boy won't latch on, mixing breastmilk with formula is a benefit. I don't know if you have already dried up yet. I didn't produce enough milk regardless what I did and was VERY depressed that I had to supplement. Hang in there!

I too have never heard of homemade formula. Not sure if you talked to anyone at la leche league but there are several things to do to increase the amount of milk you produce. Also if your child will no longer latching on have you consider pumping your milk and giving it to him in a bottle moms milk is the best but there are also organic formulas out there. Good luck i wish you nothing but the best.

I have never checked into the homemade formula myself, I can't be of much help, BUT I do suggest you taking it to your ped just to be sure that he/she agrees it is what is best for the little guy!

I also did not know about homemade formulas...I would suggest too that you pump if you can as much as possible and suppliment with your own breast milk when you have it.

H., just by reading your bulletin, it's clear that you are a loving and devoted mother. Don't beat yourself up over breastfeeding, like the other moms I agree that you should try to continue pumping and add any that you get to the formula. As for making your own formula, I'd leave that to the experts and I'd buy the real stuff like enfamil. They are tried and true and have like a million different kinds depending on your child's needs ie, soy or anti-colic. Babies need alot of nutrients and I wouldn't want to jeopardize their well being by making my own. If you prefer, there are even organic formulas too. Try asking your pediatrician for samples or maybe see if you qualify for WIC if money is tight. The best of luck! xo W.

I don't know if you have totally given up on breastfeeding or not, but there is a wonderful tea called Mother's Milk that helps increase your milk supply. Also, renting a pump from the hospital can help you get more milk and you could also contact your local la leche league for advice. You can still give breastmilk even if your son doesn't want to breastfeed. Good luck to you.

Oooh, careful, I don't know anything about that book but I'd research more before making my own formula and having that be my baby's only nutrition.
I've followed the advice of one book on a few occasions and found out later how very wrong that book was. So look for reviews about the book and see if you can find any supporting information. Is there a way to know if the homemade formula will have all of the necessary nutrients?
