Hi Moms,
I've always had a very regular menstual cycle wih no real problems to speak of. But 14 days after my last period, it now appears that I'm getting it again! Does anyone know why this may happen?

What can I do next?

Could it be that you are pregnant and having some initial spotting?

Are you on any prescription birth control or have you recently had an IUD? Sometimes the hormones in birth control can mess you up with "breakthrough bleeding" that can be anything from really light to what looks like normal period bleeding. I was on depo-provera and it made me miserable and I bled all the time...

Definitely let your OB/GYN know and see what they think. Sometimes all you need is herbal supplements or just let it ride itself out as a fluke. There's many reasons it could be...your age makes you a candidate for the beginning of wonky periods...not that you're old, LOL, but your hormones could be off-whack, or if you're using any progesterone creams or anything like that, it can also mess you up too. It's most likely nothing serious/bad, but should be checked if for no other reason as its a pain to have 2 periods in one month!!

J.-

I would make an appointment with your GYN asap. Thre could be any number of things going on. I would not mess around with that at all.

This happened to me for over a year before my first pregnancy. I would get a 2nd lighter period about 14 days after the start of my "real" period.
I think I linked it to eating too much soy products.
I was a vegetarian and my (now)husband got me eating an abundance of soy products (fake meats and such...)on top of soymilk and tofu.
Soy has estrogen in it.
Anyway, I had a miscarriage right when I would have gotton this 2nd period. I mentioned it to my obgyn who said there could be a connection. I was pregnant again with out ever having a period in between (the miscarriage and new pregnancy) and once my period returned after the birth of my 1st - it was normal again. (I had cut down on soy).

Not sure what really happened, but I thought I'd share my 2 cents, so you know you're not alone.
Would you let me know anything you learn, please?

best of luck.

Just a thought, but maybe it could be early signs / symptoms of menopause? You are 38 and it is possible to start in your mid to late thirties. See your doctor and get checked out. Knowing is half the battle with all things.

I would definitely see your obgyn and/or a specialist. In my experience, at that age, things begin to change with your menstrual cycle that can signal problems. It may be nothing at all, but it could be something that needs attention. At the very least, you need to determine what it is, as two periods a month causes you to lose more blood than perhaps is good for you. I began to have problems with my period around that age, and suffered through months of irregularity, heavy bleeding, fatigue. My regular general practitioner doctor could not figure out what the problem was, although he tried lots of things. Eventually he referred me to an obgyn who diagnosed the problem instantly - endometriosis. By that time it was way too late to do anything but have a hysterectomy. This is not to say that you have something like that, just that it is important not to ignore it, and to get a specialist to diagnose the problem as early as possible.
