Hello mommies!!! What is the probability of having a miscarriage if you get pregnant the month after you stop taking your birth control?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Geez. Little harsh Doris. I was just looking for success stories of mommies getting pregnant so close to stopping their birth control. A have a friend who miscarried and her dr told her it was because she didn't wait long enough after she stopped taking her bc. I just stopped taking my birth control the beginning of May and we just found out we are expecting and I was a little worried.

I got pregnant literally the first month off of birth control with my first daughter. She's 4 now. :) As for what the chances of miscarriage are, I honestly don't know.

I got pregnant both times the first month after stopping BC. No issues with either pregnancy. I have never heard of miscarriage being related to how quickly you get pregnant after stopping BC. That doesn't even make sense to me. Don't be nervous and bask in the pregnancy glow! Congratulations!

I had a miscarriage when I got pregnant right after going off the BC.. I Never had a cycle, and got pregnant.

My girlfriend was on BC, got pregnant and had a healthy baby.

It just depends on your body.

I got pregnant within the first month to two months of going off the pill with my youngest. I have never heard of them being tied together.

Never heard of this correlation. My sister was the type to stop her BC and be pregnant within the same month and had 3 healthy children. I don't know that was ever a factor/thought in her mind....

No different from any other pregnancy. I'm sorry your friend's doctor told her that, but it's flat-out wrong. Maybe he or she said that in an attempt to offer her some reason, but there is absolutely no data that supports what the doctor said.

I have had two pregnancies while taking the pill (one was the regular pill, the other was the progesterone-only kind) and for my surrogate pregnancy, in which I carried twins, I was on the pill as part of that process until a few weeks before the embryo transfer. That's a routine process in IVF.

Anyway...congrats on your pregnancy!

I actually had a similar conversation with my OBGYN a while back. He said that the reason why doctors advised women to wait a few months after BC before trying to conceive was ONLY because in the past they had no way of determining a reasonable due date *if* the women ended up getting pregnant right away. Some women take a while before their bodies get back on a normal cycle after BC. He also said that this is really no longer valid, because our sonogram technology can tell them so much at such an early time about due dates. He said that many doctors still give the standard "wait x amount of months before trying to conceive," but that there is no harm to trying right away. Rest assured...I am not a doctor, but I believe there is no extra chance of miscarriage from conceiving right away.

Enjoy your pregnancy...we've all got things to worry about in life. No need for you to worry about this, too. :)

It depends on what type of birth control you're talking about, and a person's individual situation and the circumstances under which they became pregnant. There are so many factors at play that probability really depends on someone's health history.

For instance, I was on birth control pills for several years. One year I was working management in retail, and was putting in 14 hour days for months on end. When the holidays came around, I kept getting sick and had sinus infections, bronchitis, laryngitis... you name it... one right after the other and the antibiotics to go with each. I ended up getting pregnant while on the pill, likely because I had been on antibiotics nearly nonstop for three months even though antibiotics weren't supposed to interact with the pill. Two years later, it happened again. Each pregnancy was rough, but all four of my pregnancies were rough and had nothing to do with how I got pregnant.

If you had the IUD and had it removed, you can get pregnant with the ovulation cycle immediately following removal.

ETA: based on your SWH response to Doris's reply. You might have better responses if your question was "tell me your successful experiences of getting pregnant right after stopping the pill". That way people won't think you are asking for medical advice, and instead are seeking community and sharing from people who have had similar experiences. It's a fine, potentially semantic, line.... But distinct and might get you more of what you are looking for.... Which is reassurance that you baby will be healthy.

Congrats by the way!

Both of my pregnancies occurred right after stopping the pill. Each time, I stopped taking BC and missed the next period because I was already pregnant. I had two wonderful, full-term pregnancies and very healthy babies. They are now 11 & 7. :) Everyone's body is different, so I don't believe there really is a 'right' answer. Just thought my personal experience would give you a little more positive feeling. Congrats and best wishes!

ETA after your SWH -
If you had added your SWH info in your original post, what you were asking would have made more sense. You seemed to be asking for medical advice or statistics, and we aren't doctors. I don't see what I said as harsh. You didn't even tell us you were pregnant...

Congrats about your pregnancy, btw...

Original:
Why don't you look this up? We don't know that. Anything we say would be pure conjecture unless it's from a credible medical source. I don't even know if they have these statistics compiled. All the doctors' offices in the country would have to give that info to a centralized data service...

My OB told me that you're most fertile right when you go off BC (specifically the pill, in my case) and that each month after that it diminishes a tiny bit. So, yes, you could very easily get pregnant as soon as you stop using birth control. As for having a miscarriage, that could happen with any pregnancy and I don't think the BC has anything to do with it. I don't think you're any more likely to miscarry right after going off BC than any other time.

I stopped taking my pills the first time (after being on them for thirteen years) in mid January 2007. Best guess is that we conceived the first week in February. Healthy 9+lb. baby born later that year. He's 5 1/2 now, and perfectly healthy. It was only six weeks after I stopped the second time that I got pregnant. Another big healthy baby.

I can't speak to probabilities, but in my case everything was fine twice. Unless your friend's doctor is clairvoyant, he is speculating as to the cause of her miscarriage. Maybe it was the timing and birth control, maybe not. Either way, no sense in getting yourself upset over something you can't control.

Relax, mama :-) and congrats!
