I am trying to get pregnant again, I'm on my second month of trying. I got pregnant the first time right away. I am have been taking thyroid medicine for 3 months now. Could this be effecting anything or does my age have something to do with it also?

What can I do next?

I dealt with secondary infertility and it was terribly frustrating. The best thing I've found is www.fertilityfriend.com It's a charting software that helps pinpoint ovulation. The site has loads of information about trying to conceive. Good luck!

Hi K.,

I am 39 and have had a underactive thyroid for 22 years. The first time I got pregnant took me 8 years. The second time took me 2 years of course I didn't know I was pregnant because with thyroid problems your menstral cycle gets abnormal. I ended up having a miscarriage. The third time I got pregnant was with my second husband and we got pregnant 6 days after I got married. So, yes it does have something to do with it but also you just have to stay positive. If you have your thyroid under control and normal then you shouldn't have a huge problem getting pregnant. You should give it 6 months to a year before thinking about seeing a specialist or having your husband tested. This is something that will just take some time. If you are seeing an endocrinologist, he/she will tell you it takes about 2 weeks for the meds to be in your system. Then they like to test you every 3 months until they get a consistent reading. Just keep praying and Good luck.

Thyroid medication does effect your hormone levels so it can effect how quickly you get pregnant. You are only on month two of trying and most doctors require you to try for 6 months before they will do anything to help.

Almost every woman I know who takes thyroid medication also takes a form of natural progesterone to help balance hormones so this might be something you could discuss with your doctor. Just be sure it is a natural progesterone, not a progestin - progesterone helps getting pregnant, progestin hinders and is unsafe.

When I was 35 I started having some problems with miscarriages. I went to my doctor and he ran tests and discovered that I wasn't ovulating every month. I went two or three months without ovulating. He indicated that it was my age causing that. He offered to send me to a fertility doctor, but I refused.

I guess the trick would be to catch it in the month you do ovulate. And if you do decide to take Progesterone, then keep it up after you get pregnant, because quiting cold turkey could cause a miscarriage.

Hey K.,

Coming from another mom that is in your age group, I'm 39. It can take a bit to get pregnant. I agree with the other ladies about the thyroid medication...make sure you ask your ob/gyn if it is safe to take it while ttc & during your pregnancy. I was on it, when we were ttc and it was fine.

As far as "fertility" issues...since you are in your 30's you actually have an advantage. Anyone that is ttc 30-under, usually has to ttc for 1 year w/o birth control before they will do any testing. 30 + only have to wait 6 months w/o birth control...so if you don't get pg between now and then, there is hope!

Another fertility note (they don't tell you this in SEX ED)...when you are of "older" maternal age, you are more likely to have multiples. I'm not trying to scare anyone, but it a fact. My RE (reproductive endocrinologist) told me this at our first meeting.

I suffer from PCOS so I needed medical intervention to get pg. I did the high powered injections and as a result, I conceived triplets...however, I only delivered twins. I was 35 when the A's were born. If I was ttc now, I would have to go thru it again, but we are content with the twins and have been truly Blessed.

Hope all works out for you. Keep us posted. It is always great to hear when someone is going to have a baby!

Take care,
God Bless,
J. D

I was on tyroid meds when I tried to get pregnant 4th time the nurse told me that it would be hard to get pregnant but its not very good on me if I thought about not taking the meds too it can be very serious, but women have gotten pregnant even on tyroid meds you might need to go get your hormone level checked

First of all, I agree with the posters that said to talk to your doctor about your medication. More for the fact that you want to know if it is safe during pregnancy.

As for not being pregnant yet, it is still early. I got pregnant my second cycle on my first (at 22), my 3rd month of trying with me second (at 24), and my 3rd month of trying with my third (at 26). Now I am pregnant with my 4th after having no cycle while nursing. I know that I have been extremely blessed in not having to try very long, but I understand that any time past the first month feels like a long time. :) Hang in there, I wouldn't worry about your age until it has been a few more months.

My older sister is in her late 30 and just had a baby boy. So it really depends on the person. I'm in my 30 and have had my tubes tied in my 20 and don't want any more myself. However when I did get pregnant with my children I wasn't tring presay, Because when I worried about not being pregnant and wanted a child badly it seemed like it just wouldn't happen. I quit tring and got pregnant. Sometime we can stress over something and it will keep it from happening. SO don't stress over it.
Hope this helps.

I understand the drive, especially once you hit the age you and I are, to have another child. You start feeling (right or wrong) like time is running out and if you don't have one soon you may not be able to. But, Hon, you're going to drive yourself crazy if you stay so worried about it. The reality today is that women, even ones with hormone issues and other complications, are having children all the way into their 40's. You have some time. And 2 months is not long at all to be trying. It is much more likely that you are stressing so much that your body is feeling it is not the right time for a baby than it is likely that you are having medical complications with getting pregnant. The stress response throws your hormones out of balance so if you are feeling super stressed about getting pregnant (and it shows in your post you are) those stress hormones can actually make it more difficult for you to get pregnant. High amounts of stress can keep you from getting pregnant faster than any medical condition will. It has only been two months of trying and your body has only had 3 months to adjust to a new amount of hormones from your thyroid issue so give your body some time to adjust and relax. You just had a child 3 years ago so you know you are capapble of getting pregnant and carrying to term. Just give yourself a little break and chances are it will happen in its own time. And if in the next year you still haven't gotten some good news then its still not time worry, just time to talk to the doctor. I know this from personal experience as well as watching so many other women go through the same thing. Calm down; focus on being as healthy as you can in mind, body and spirit; enoy the child you have and enjoy trying to get pregnant without focusing on the outcome. I know its hard when you want it so badly but you have to try to relax, that will be your best ally in getting pregnant. What helped me relax was that I started going to a meditatio group and when I start getting wound up over anything I use those techniques to get centered and calm down. Needless to say, I know this works as I am now pregnant (by the way, I have thyroid issues too.) Good luck.

Hi K.,
I've been training in Health & Wellness and have learned about natural progesterone cream. The company that I'm in love with over 350 products, Pure Swiss is the answer. Arbonne has a product called Prolief, we have had over 10 women get pregnant by applying 1 pump a day on their soft areas of body, use 21 days and off 7 within 2 months they were pregnant. We eat two much estrogens in foods now and too many carbs (make us produce too much estrogens)progesterone is what lowers this and helps the fetus stay connected to uterus wall. If you would like to try this let me know it only takes 3 days to be shipped to your house.

Possibly both, so check with your OB/GYN. Two things that worked for me (I'm 36 and pregnant) are the maybemom ovulation tester and robitussin. I checked with a pharmacist about the robitussin, so it is safe. You take some (plain) robitussin before sex and it helps thin the mucus, making it easier on the sperm. The maybemom is awesome. It's a saliva ovulation test. You lick a tiny glass slide every morning (it looks like a lipstick) and when you look through the glass, it tells you whether you are ovulating by what you see. It worked GREAT for me. I got a cheap one on ebay. Check out their website www.maybemom.com. Good luck.

My name is K. S and I am from Alabama. I have been working with a company for over 5 years and have learned so much about our hormones. I really believe that your hormones are out of balance especially since you are taking thyroid medication. My suggestion is our natural hormone (progesterone) that you get and put onto thin skinned areas morning and night. We have had so many testimonials of increasing sex drive and fertility because of the hormone issue. Also, as we get older we produce less of progesterone and other factors deplete what little that we produce. You can contact me at ###-###-#### or ____@____.com for more info.

relax!! You said yourself, it is only the 2nd month of trying. Nobody gets pregnant the first time every time. Give it a couple months and you'll soon be on your way to a new baby.

I tried for 8 months, so I feel your frustration. A supplement that I think finally helped was Evening Primerose Oil. It is suposed to enrich your uterine lining to encourage egg implantation.
