Kids have to stay in a booster until they are 6 years old and 60 pounds (I think its 60, I know it is 6 years old).
I was wondering if anybody knew the law about how old does your child have to stay in a car seat? I have a soon to be 4 years old and was wondering if I could take him out of his booster seat.
Kids have to stay in a booster until they are 6 years old and 60 pounds (I think its 60, I know it is 6 years old).
Georgia Law requires children under the age of six to remain in a child safety seat. Age eight is recommended for maximum safety, and the back seat until age twelve.
They have to be at least 4 foot 6, and I think 60 lbs. I'm not sure about the weight, but I am sure about the height. Hope this helped.
No. 4 years old is when you can usually just start using a booster. Before that they should be in a convertible car seat with a 5 point harness. Here is info from the web on when you can switch:
The general rule of thumb when it comes to allowing your child to stop using a booster seat is eight years, 80 pounds, and approximately 58 inches. Even if your child meets these age and weight criteria, you should make sure that she is able to:
keep her back straight and flush against the back seat cushion while seated. Sit so that her knees are able to bend comfortably over the edge of the seat cushion without her having to scoot forward or slouch.
Finally, the shoulder belt should fit across her chest between her neck and arms and the lap portion of the belt should touch her thighs instead of resting across her stomach.
5 years old and over 50 lbs.
I believe the law (unless it has changed) states the any child under the age of 6 must be in a booster/car seat. This is what we always went by when I worked a a day care center.

I heard they have to weigh at least 50 pounds or more. I took my daughter out of her booster seat when she was 6 only because she didn't weight 50 pounds until then. I also think their height is a factor. If they are very small the seat belt won't go across them correctly. L.

they must be at least 57 inches and 60 pounds.for some of us that limit takes forever my 5 yearold is still in one. my 12 yearold just finally got out of it last year.
I am thinking it is 12 years old or a certain weight. Go to your browser and type in carseat guidlines to see if you get a hit. You have to be 12 in order to sit in the front seat.
A.,
The NHTSA website has tons of great info on car seats. http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/ It's really better to go by the height/weight of your child than age, since they're all so different!
Georgia state law requires children under age 6 to ride in an approved car seat or booster seat that is appropriate for their height and weight. Children under age 6 also must ride in the back seat unless all back seat positions are in use by other passengers or there is no back seat. Georgia law requires children ages 7 to 16 to be buckled in a seat belt.
Hey A.,
you are in luck. i actually looked that up this weekend. it says that children 6 and over may ride with just the seatbelt and children under 6 must ride in a carseat. I hope this helps!

I think the magic numbers are 4'9 and 40lbs., but dont quote me on that.
Do not take him out of his carseat!! He has to be in one in the state of Georgia until he's six years old. My husband and I found out the hard way. Even though we had our five year old (then four) in a booster seat, it didn't have a high back. We were in a really bad car accident. My son wasn't hurt, but my husband was given a ticket for not having him in a high-back booster. It's better to be safe than sorry!
Hi A.,
From what I understand, children in Georgia need to be in a child restraint until the age of 6. I am not sure what the weight requirements are, though. Probably an easy way to find out is to call the non-emergency number to your local police department and ask. They usually have a public safety person who inspects car seats and therefore knows all the laws. You can always look it up on the internet as well. I hope this helps!
In Georgia I belive children must stay in booster seats till they are at least 6 years old.
I believe in GA it is 8 years old or a certain lb limit. Check with the local police department to see the details.
I don't know if the law actually says this but...
I've been told that they need to be in some type of child restraint until they are 5 years old.
I've also been told that a child under the age of 13 isn't suppose to ride in the front seat (unless you have a single cab truck )
Good luck
I did find out something for you on this topic.
There is no age limit. However; anyone under 5 foot 9 inches and anyone who is 95 pounds or less is required to be in a car seat/booster seat. Age is not a factor!
Also, if your car has a passenger side airbag then no one under the age of 13 is suppose to ride in that seat.
"changes in State Law that go into effect as of July 1 st . Under the new law children under age six will be required to be in a car seat or booster seat appropriate for their height and weight and used according to the manufacturer's instructions. The new law also requires children under six to ride in the rear seat."
