Funeral Songs for Mom

My Momma, 60, suffered a heart attack Monday afternoon and died while driving to our house to bring us dinner. Every Monday she would bring our family a 5 course meal. We got her car out of the pound yesterday and had to empty all of the food out of her trunk. Her little dog was also in the accident but is fine she is too with us. We have been going through her house trying to piece things together. She was doing so good and ready to get new curtains and celebrate Thanksgiving at my G/mas… this is terribly hard we miss her so much. I want to help make her memorial just like her a little sugar and spice. I want to include traditional hyms but also include some Bruce Spring Sting, Joni Mitchell, or Bob Dylan as those were some of her favorite artists. Our church is more than happy to play whatever we wish any song titles would be much help.

What can I do next?

I'm so sorry for your loss. How lovely that you are researching for music that SHE liked! You are a wonderful daughter!

Bob Dylan - The Times They are a Changin'

Joni Mitchell - Circle Game (i like the live version from Miles of Aisles)

Bruce Springsteen - If I Should Fall Behind

The Byrds, Bob Dylan or Bruce Springsteen all have a version of "Chimes of Freedom"

Bob Dylan - Blowin' In The Wind (I like The Bootleg Series, Vol. 7"No Direction Home" version because of the harmonica stuff.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that Bruce has a good song on his Rising album "You're Missing" - nice slow rhythm.
And of course, The Byrds have the classic "Turn, Turn, Turn" -- which sings the verse from Ecclesiastes 3 in the Bible.

First of all -- I am so sorry to hear of your loss. What a tragic thing to happen so close to the holidays and to someone so young. I wish you the peace that only the Lord can provide!

What about the Eric Clapton song, No Tears In Heaven? It is an absolutely beautiful song and is inline with type of music you mother liked.

Again -- I am so sorry and will be praying for you!

I'm so sorry for your loss. Your Mom sounds like she was a wonderful person.

My best friend's Mom passed away in August. She was a lover of Bruce Springsteen, Rolling Stones, and The Beatles, to name a few. During her memorial service, we played "Across the Universe"(Beatles), "Here Comes the Sun" (Beatles) and "Don't Stop Thinkin' About Tomorrow" by Fleetwood Mac. One of the songs I used in the video montage was Van Morrison's "Into the Mystic". It's a really pretty song too.

I'm sure the service will turn out to be a beautiful tribute and celebration of your Mom's life.

Wow. I'm so sorry to hear you going through this. You are in my thoughts and prayers today and all through the holiday season.

I think the best funeral song is "I Can ONly Imagine." That song always brings tears to my eyes. A lot of Christian arts sing it, but I think the popular version is by Mercy Me.

Again, I'm so sorry for what you're going through!

A. I want you to know first and foremost I am very sorry for your loss. I too have lost my sweet Mom and at her funeral we played the song "Goodnight My Angel" by Billy Joel. It was perfect and sweet. You can google the song and listen to it. I think you will also find it very appropriate for the occasion. My prayers are with you. I know your hurt!

A.,

What about Sting's "I'll Be Watching You."

My in-laws both passed away in the last six years. We did this for their funerals, and made it more a story about their life, than grieving for their deaths. At my father-in-laws funeral we played "The Sky is Crying," which was one of his favorites, and the moment the song ended, we could hear rain come pouring down outside. It convinced us that we were doing the right thing, and that he was in heaven watching us.

God Bless you and your family in this time.

I too am a motherless daughter. Lost my mom 11 years ago to a heart attack ( she was 44). I feel you and will pray for you as yougo thru these next weeks.

We put all kinds of music on moms funeral CD, but 2 of my favorites are Friends and Your Song by Elton John. Put all the music that reminds you of her, dont care what anyone thinks.

As I look back on it now I can smile. I remember sitting at the funeral directors office and the make up lady called and asked if I wanted her to repaint moms nails "A nice shade of pink" I asked waht color she had on and she told me "Kind of an Electric Blue..." I smiled, and said, "No pink, I'll bring you the blue to touch up...my mom wasnt a pink polish kind of girl! " :O)

The I brought her clothes that she had just gotten for Christmas ( She died Dec 29) a blue cashmere sweater she had wanted sooooooo bad and a black skirt and socks, becasue her feet were always cold. :o) She is still your mom, so sweet girl, you let her be your mom and do what you want.

Love and hugs and prayers,

K.
