Does Mirena IUD Affect Breastmilk Supply?

I have a 7 week old baby at home and I'm considering getting the Mirena IUD sometime in the next 6 mos, but I worry that it may decrease my breastmilk supply. I plan on nursing until she is a year old. I'm currently on the mini-pill (which supposedly doesn't interfere with my supply), but I'm worried that I won't remember to take it at the same time every day. With two at home it's hard to remember to take my pill on time! I would greatly appreciate any feedback on your experiences with Mirena and breastfeeding, or any other general info you'd like to share about Mirena. I think we'll have a third child, but not for several more years. Thanks!

I had a Mirena placed at 8 months post-partum to control my periods (I'm one of the UNLUCKY ones, who never missed a period after I delivered, even though I was breastfeeding entirely, in fact my periods got even WORSE!) I don't know if it was coincidence or not, but my supply seemed to increase for about a month after that-- I had a easier time pumping at work anyway!

i was told that the mirena does NOT affect milk supply. i dont remember when i got it, but i was still nursing my son (he self weaned at 19 months!) and it never seemed to bother or affect anything.

so good luck with this decision. you might want to wait a while, let your body readjust from after your pregnancy, especially if you delivered vaginally. but the mirena is the way to go!

It does not affect the supply. I had Mirena put in at my postpatum check up and have been nursing the whole time. My daughter is now 6 1/2 months old and growing great.

Idk the answer to if the IUD will affect your supply but I was in your same situation a couple of months ago. I just set my alarm to take my minipill so that I could make sure it is taken at the same time everyday and that has been working perfectly! I have a two year old and a 5 month old at home with me everyday!

I'm going to copy/paste what I put on the other post...

DO NOT GET AN IUD THIS EARLY AFTER DELIVERY! I've had 3 friends get an IUD 6-10wks after delivery and have had it implant in the uterus. Its also the biggest warning you can find online when doing IUD research. Because your uterus is still shrinking and changing up to a year after birth, its not wise to get an IUD until you are around a year post partum. I know that both Mirena and Paraguard ok their use from 6wks post partum, but its just not wise. Talk to your doctor. I got mine put in at 17mos post partum and have had no problems, but almost everyone I know who had one put in before that 8-12mos post partum mark has had big problems with it implanting in the changing uterus, or with massive hormone surges. I think if you are nursing and this early post partum, using condoms is a good choice to not mess with your hormones and so your body can return to its normal pre-baby state without anything there to hinder the process.

Now that being said, it won't affect your milk supply. I had mine put in at 17mos post partum and I was still nursing, and he went on to nurse for another 8mos after that without a problem.

Congratulations on your baby!

Mirena and Breastfeeding Research
It is a widespread misconception that Mirena is just an intrauterine device (IUD) that cannot expose a breastfed infant to any hormones. However, this is simply not true. The hormones in Mirena reach the bloodstream in the mother and do pass through the breast milk to the infant.

It's important to note that Mirena is a progestin-only contraceptive (which contains no estrogen). These contraceptives are not likely to affect the quantity and quality of breast milk.

Women who are breastfeeding may have a higher risk for uterine perforation due to Mirena. Your healthcare provider may not be comfortable inserting Mirena while you are breastfeeding, especially if he or she has not had much experience using Mirena.

I don't have personal experience with Mirena, but from what I understand it does not affect breast milk supply. It is non-hormonal just like the mini pill, that's why it's safe to use while breast feeding.

I did not have any issues with breastmilk supply after having my Mirena IUD placed. I had the Mirena placed when my 2nd son was about 2 months old and I continued to breastfeed until he was 14 months old. We never needed to supplement with formula. I always had enough milk.

I had my Mirena inserted 8 weeks after having my second child and nursed her until she was 10 1/2 months old. I had no issues with my milk supply. In fact, I was actually overproducing until my daughter was 4 - 5 months old.
I have been absolutely thrilled with my IUD - I don't have to think about bc, I haven't had any side effects, and I haven't had my period since before I got pregnant! WOHOO!
I have several girlfriends who have gotten the Mirena in the past year and all have had no side effects and are really happy with their decision. Good luck!

Mirena never affected my milk supply. I did have an experience with it slipping out of place after it had been in for a year, but it's really unusual for that to happen. I love the IUD and plan to keep using it until menopause or something better comes along.
