My daugther was born on April 7th, 2008. She was 4 weeks early and is a healthy and great little girl!! She has been great with eating and sleeping. Better then my son was. Yesterday and today she hasn't made a bowel movement and it is concering me. Is this normal? I don't remember with my son!! My husband says I am worrying to much!!

What can I do next?

Hi L., my breastfed baby didn't poo for a WEEK,
and that scared ME, the doc said it was normal and fine,

What i would do, was use a rectal thermometer and vaselin up the COOLIE, and leave it in till the poo came out, usually took about 5 minutes.

But he seemed fine, it was me that had the problem ,

Good luck

M

well write it down at first to keep track, most newborns do go at least once a day but more over there should be a pattern... like every morning or everyother day...but especially with a premature baby I would call your peditrican and keep notes...they usually don't let babies leave the hospital until they are sure that all the plumbing is working but it never hurts to call and ask your peditrican when you should be concerned...that's why they are there...my husband teases that my peditrican is my boyfriend because even with 5 kids if I have a question I need an answer to, I call! Goodluck, try not to worry...my kids that were a little early always took a little longer to catch on to eating and stuff but after about a month or two all was normal.

Is she drinking plenty? If so I would wait and see if anything happens today UNLESS you feel she is uncomfortable. If you feel that this is the case, I would call the DR. He may recommend an over the counter infent soposatory or something.

Sometimes poop happens and sometimes it don't. Don't worry too much yet. :)

L.,

My breastfed babies always had a bowel movement with just about every diaper change, upwards of 6-7 a day in the early days. That being said, every baby is different and yours may not be the pooper that mine were. As always, your pediatrician should be happy to address your concerns. I'm sure there are signs to look for that would indicate some sort of a problem, but I don't know what they are since mine were way to active in the poop category! Good luck with that. I hope that your husband is right in this instance.

When that happened to my daughter, my doctor suggested stimulating her rectum by inserting a thermometer dipped in vasoline. As soon as I removed the thermometer, it was like old faithful. 5 days worth of poop- and it just kept coming, so if you try this trick at home, make sure you are prepared with an extra diaper and wipes!

Hi L.
When my daughter was born, the pediatrician told me that it was nothing to be concerned about unless she didnt have a BM for 72 hours....
I was a bit surprised by that, but he deliberately told me this info before it even became an issue (the first time he saw her in the hospital - she was less than 24 hours old), because he said it's so common and a lot of people get concerned needlessly.
Take care and best of luck with your two little ones!

My daughter who will be one Saturday, would do that every so often. She would just stop pooping for a couple of days. My pediatrician told me that it was common and perfectly fine for babies not to go even upto a week. as long as they are peeing, which shows that they are hydrated, it should be fine. Just keep track of it.

If your child is breatfed than they often will not have a bowl movement every day. I don't know about bottle fed newborns. If your worried call your ped. that's what they are there for.

Hi L.,
My son was exclusively breastfed and until he started solid foods at 6 months, he had a bm every 3 or 4 days. It worried the heck out of us at first (we had that chart that said he HAD to go multiple times a day), but our ped said for bf babies it's fine. I'd check with your ped about the preemie-thing (ours was 5 days late), but breastmilk is just so precisely tailored to what your child needs, it's not uncommon/bad to not see a bm - without stimulation.
