Dark Grey Poop??

My daughter is a little over 4 weeks old and when changing her this morning, I noticed her stool is very dark grey and as thick as peanut butter with a wicked stench! The Dr. suggested I switch from Enfamil Premium formula to Good Start (which I did on Friday). Has this happened to anyone? Should I be concerned? I am saving the diaper and will call dr. on Monday - but today is Sunday and it's going to bother me until then. Any help/words of advice I greatly appreciate!!

What can I do next?

I wouldn't worry too much. Did you switch forumla? Did it help? Sometimes this can be an allergy thing; however, if the Dr. suspected that he/she would have probably told you to try rice or soy formula. The different brands of formulas have different things in them, and given your Dr. suggestion, my guess is that some "filler" part of the Enfamil can cause this sometimes. Switching should take care of it. Also, strange poop goes with babies. Poop becomes normal conversation when you have children, it is crazy.

The first night home from the hospital my daughter (my first child) had bright orange pee, with crystals in it! We flipped. The Dr., told us we needed to push fluids fast. It was really scared I didn't have enough milk and neither my husband or I could think. I had to call my Dad so he could talk me through cleaning bottles. Long story short, we used formula, and my daughter is now 10 years old. She is fine.

Hang in there. I know this stuff is scary but you'll be fine. But if your real worried go to the ER, you will not be the first nervious mother to go to the ER. You do have to trust your gut.

Usually there is some change based on changing formulas. I once heard . as long as the poop isn't white you are ok. Don't worry , she is fine :)

It could just be the transition between the two formulas. It should clear up as time passes. I used Good Start on my son after I stopped breast feeding and it was the closest thing to breast feed baby poop I had ever seen!! He never had any problems with it.

Good luck and congrats on the new baby!

It's really not necessary to save the diaper. :)

An infant's bowel movements will change color frequently based on what she eats or what you eat (if breastfeeding). When my kids ate carrots or beets it was quite obvious by the rainbow poop.

Color is not as important as consistency. If they're pebble poops she's constipated and if it's too watery it's obviously diarrhea. Of course call the doc in the morning but don't fret, it's normal.

Yes - I have been a little worried in the past, myself. It can come out in many colors and scents. Not to worry. There are many normal reasons for this.
