Could I Be Pregnant? - Jacksonville, FL

So, my husband and I had sex and were both well aware that pregnancy was a possibility which was fine with both of us. I was convinced that I was so I took hpt which came back negative however I took the test a week prior to even being late on my period. I assumed it was too early for a hpt to detect if I was pregnant or not. My period started 6 days early and stopped after 2 days. It started up again (light) and ended around the 6th day. I did take another test when my period stopped after 2 days and that test also came back negative. I have been cramping for almost a month now so I made a doctors appt for the beginning of next month. This morning I felt really nauseated and threw up! I was just curious what the chances are of having a period while pregnant and getting negative test results??? My first pregnancy was real simple..missed my period..took a test I was pregnant. Some people say it's possible to have your period others say it's ridiculous to even think that you could be pregnant when you have your period. I want advice from the moms out there that have been there and know from experience. Please advise!!!

What can I do next?

Hi there
yes you could be prego.....i had what they called "break through bleeding" for about a week, when in fact i was already 3 weeks pregnant. Of course i did not know that & didn't take a test for about 4 more weeks because i thought i missed that mo.s period....however i was already 7 weeks pregnant. So going to the dr.s is the right thing to do. Good luck....god bless....J. j

Everyone is different and every pregnancy is different. I had five pregnancies, one was a miscarriage, and they were all different. I experienced a type of cramping with my second pregnancy which was the "memory" stretching of muscles and ligaments in the pelvis. I had one occassion of light bleeding and cramping at about 7 weeks...very scary, but I had a positive test result first. Reading some other responses before I responded, yes, you could be pregnant, but the HPT are very accurate (99.9%) so if you are getting a negative result, seeing your doctor is a must. The blood test is the BEST way to know for sure and describing your syptoms to your doctor is the only way to know for sure what is going on. Our female reproductive organs are complicated and the the tissues can do many different things, all of which should be diagnosed and treated by a doctor you trust. If you are trying to have a second child stay positive, take care of yourself, take prenatal vitamins, eat well and stay active. Becoming anxious will reek havoc on your emotions and hormones and make things more difficult. I was anxious about getting pregnant the second time and it took months...the last two I was pretty happy and relaxed and they came with ease. (Mother of 4)

Hi L.,
Sorry this is a little late resonse, but I wanted to let you know that my first pregnancy, I didn't find out that I was pregnant until I was 3 months along because my first to months I had a period, it was light and irregular, but I bled and then I felt crampy and nauseous and took a test. That one was positive.
On my 4th pregnancy, I actually missed my period and I took 3 home tests and they came out negative, it turned out that it was just too early and I really was pregnant, so I would definitely see your doctor.

Good luck, and take care!

Most Definitely! My second pregnancy I had my period the first month for about 3 days and then spotted in the second month the day after i took a hpt and it was positive. I thought I was miscarrying but it turned out I was 7.5 weeks along!! That was 5 years ago. So yes you can have a period when you are already pregnant. Good Luck!

I had a period when I found ut I was pregnant with my son. It was the same way. Started and stopped, then started again really light. Nothing like my normal periods. It is definitely possible to have a period while you are pregnant, ut hpt are usually pretty accurate. I would go see your dctor

I was like that a few months before I ended up pregnant. I went to the doctors and asked him why my period was all messed up and he told me that my body was getting ready for conception. So even though you might not be pregnant this month I would continue to try, if that is what you want to do. My husband and I got pregnant 5 months after we had our first one. We are now due in Decemeber and can't be more happy because it took up a year to concieve the first one. Good luck. If you need any other advise feel free to contact me.

Yes you can be pregnant and still have your cycle. I have know women who had their cycle all the way through their pregnancies. The best way to know for sure is to visit you OB/GYN and have them do another test and examination. It's better to be safe.

oooooooo, you're going to get a lot of responses on this subject. Yes, you can have your period after just getting pregnant. It may not be full blown like usual and you may even have a little spotting the the second month. But that is common. But still keep your apt with your dr and let us know!!!! Congrats if you are!!!!

It is not possible to have your menstrual cycle if you are pregnant, because pregnancy hormones immediately prevent ovulation. BUT it is possible to have "period-like" bleeding during pregnancy unrelated to your menstrual cycle. It is most common early in pregnancy, during the first tri-mester and can happen for a variety of reasons that are not necessarily harmful to the baby. So, yes, you could bleed and still be pregnant, but would likely have a positive HPT I would think. I would count your cycle days and see if the day you "did it" coincides with your likely ovualtion date. That might give you a better idea as to whether or not you might be pregnant.

As being a nurse in the OB/GYN field for years, I have to tell you that not having your period definately can mean that you can be pregnant. However, you can also have your period when you are pregnant. It is rare, but it happens. Your best bet is to have a blood test to see if you are pregnant. Honestly, if you take a home pregnancy test and you are on your period, it might give a false reading. Congrats, if you are pregnant.

Definitely keep your appt with your doc. It can happen.

But also, you might want to call your doc's office and tell them your symptoms to see if the cramping is anything to be worried about. (I don't remember cramping for a month with either of my pregnancies so it seems unusual to me). I have read that with a tubal pregnancy (ectopic pregnancy) there is sometimes bleeding (as in spotting or a partial period) and abdominal pain. So I would raise that question with your doctor. If that ends up being your situation, you should find that out now, rather than wait a month. You might have more options to save your fallopian tube sooner rather than later. I hope that none of this applies to you and don't want to scare you, but it can't hurt to raise the question with your doc to rule it out... and hopefully confirm a normal pregnancy that just didn't show up yet.

You did not say how long ago your "opportunity" for pregnancy happened, but up to 3 weeks, I wouldn't think anything about the HPT reading negative. Beyond 3 weeks though, I would think it is much more accurate.

God Bless!

After I had my son almost 3 years ago, everything changed with my periods. Not only did they become tremendously more crampy, I am ALWAYS NAUSEAS the first 2 days of my period. I talked to my OB/GYN & she mentioned the change in hormones at the onset of your period can make you nauseas.

I too had several times where I thought I could be pregnant because of the nauseau & erratic bleeding.

There are some options to help with the symptoms, the most common being some form of estrogen based pill (birth control). There are even some drugs to help with the nauseau (Phenergan ?sp?- I have this one but it knocks me out!).

Check with your OB/GYN. Good luck!

You can't have a "period" and be pregnant but you can have bleeding during pregnancy. I bled for the first trimester with two of my pregnancies. I always had a positive pregnancy test though. So, I think if your test is negative then chances are you are not pregnant.
