Hi Moms, I have a question. I had my first period with breastfeeding when my son was about 7 months. I am about 10 days late for second period now. I got negative responses to 2 home pregnancy tests. Has anyone else experienced irregular cycles while nursing? Thanks!

What can I do next?

The same thing happened to me when I first got my period while breastfeeding my son. It took a few months to become a regular cycle again. It's normal!

Hello ;)
I got mine back at 9 mo....once..then skipped a couple of months, then once, lol. We are still nursing at 23 mo & I've only had it about 5 times.
It's normal!

I never got a period while I was breastfeeding but it has been irregular ever since I quit. I stopped breastfeeding when my son was about 13 months old and he is now almost 18 months old. My last period was about 2 1/2 weeks late. I took a preg. test too because I was getting a little worried, but sure enough it came. I never used to have a problem with this because I was on the pill before I got pregnant so I was always very regular. I think it is totally normal. Good luck!

J., It's normal to have irregular cycles while breastfeeding, so you can relax. If no period in 2 weeks you might want to repeat the home pregnancy tests especially if you are having symptoms of pregnancy. Please don't neglect to use contraception unless of course you are eager to become pregnant again. Research says ideal time to plan your next pregnancy is after your baby turns 18 months. By then your body has fully recovered and chances of a healthy pregnancy are much more likely. R., Nurse Midwife Mom of 2.

I had a really light period at 14 months. Then it was awhile before I had another light period. At 18 months I had a "real" period - not a light one, and was fairly regular until I got pregnant again at 20 months. (They were just a bit long.) I was charting my temperature and cervical fluid all this time, so I wasn't alarmed when my periods were irregular at first. From charting, I knew I wasn't pregnant.

My cycles were REALLY irregular after my second baby. Sometimes every two weeks, sometimes skipped altogether. To help you "predict" when you're going to get your period, you can start charting your cervical fluid and temperatures (as if you were doing, or maybe you'd like to try, as I do and love, Natural Family Planning). At least, then you have a "two week warning" that yes, in fact, you ovulated and yes, in fact, you should expect to get a period. One resource is "familyplanning.net" (consider ordering their little green book that has a whole section on breastfeeding and cycles) and the other, I don't think associated specifically with NFP, is "mymonthlycycle.com." Also, you could check into "couple to couple league." They do temperatures as well as cervical fluid charting. It's easy, once explained and very effective. I suppose a caveat I should mention is that if you are on hormonal birth control it's not, though! :)

You have a lot of hormones in your body. You are not going to have a normal period for awhile.

With my first baby, I got my period at 8 months, skipped a month and then only had one more before I got pregnant with my second. The month I skipped I took 3 pregnancy tests because I was concerned. Obviously they were all negative. The second time around, I didn't get my period until 12 months. Then again, I skipped a period and it wasn't predictable until my baby was 16 months old. So, it probably will take some time to get back to "normal." And it will most likely be a "new normal." My periods have been different since having my girls in their flow and cramping, etc. Good luck with whatever you figure out!

Ya, I was pregnant though!

Got off the pill because I was brusing. Got one period right away then not my next. 1 week later found out I was pregnant.

Not saying that is your case but maybe. I know several people that were pregnant and had multiple negative tests. Go to doctor for sure.

Best of luck. :)

I had my period very irregulary (on for a 10 days off for 3 back on again) for almost a month around the time my son was 7 months and then it never returned until months after my boy was done nursing.
