We have an ecoquest...we LOVE it! Get's all the odors out of the air, we have three dogs, four cats and four kids..LOL! It is expensive but worth it!
Have any of you a recommendation for a home air purifier?
We have three cats and three dogs. We all have seasonal allergies.
The house is over 3000 sq ft. I am assuming I would need two, or would it be better to go with a whole house system connected to the furnace?
I have just started researching this and since you ladies always have good advice so I am asking here first.
Thanks,
~M~

You need a HEPA air cleaner. I love our Honeywell. The HEPA filter has to be changed less often than other cleaners. Just vacuum it weekly.
You can get furnace filters that will help get some of the allergens out. Check with your local home improvement store. 3M makes one. They will make your furnace work a bit harder to push the air, but definitely worth it.
I suggest a combo of the two for good results. Put the air cleaners in the bedrooms, they will do the most good there where you sleep.
Another vote for the Ecoquest! We bought one last year and I sincerely don't know how we got along without it.
Edit* We have had no ill effects from our ecoquest purifier. Actually quite the opposite! It has made a big difference in our health for the better.
I'm with some of the other moms. I love Ecoquest! no ill effects at all.
My husband sells them, and may let you try it before purchase. The only issue is the distance. We are in Baltimore.
We have a big one, then a little light socket one near the litter box.
We had to buy one for my daughter (she has major dust allergies) so I can give you a few pointers from her allergist.
Make sure you get one with a HEPA filter and not an ozone purifier (those are extremely irritating). It needs to blow the air out or up and not down. And the higher the CADR rating (controlled air delivery rate) the more effective it is.
We bought a Holmes Air purifier from Target for $145. It had the higher CADR ratings (in the 200's) than some of the more expensive ones. Whirlpool makes one that is supposed to be one of the best. Not sure what its ratings are but it's around $275.
Hope that helps!
I have an Edenpure whole house air purifier. It was just under $300. It has 5 fan speeds, 5 purification level, anion and sterilization options. I love it and its easy to clean.
Check out allergybuyersclub.com, I purchased two of them and they seem to work really well. I got the IQ Health Pro kind, they were a bit expensive but worth it.
Good luck.
We tried the air purifier units - total waste of $! A whole house purifier is the way to go. We all have allergies and the dust + cat + dog were really getting us. We finally got an air purifier and humidifier (our house was REALLY dry) put on our system and it is SOOO nice. We have a lot less dust and we can really tell the difference if we spend the night somewhere else! I don't know if they service your area but we had ours installed by Midlothian Mechanical ###-###-####). I can not recommend them enough - very professional, clean, okay with answering questions, etc. Super competitive on prices too. We have had a ton of work done by them (new system, air purifier, humidifier, tankless hot water heater, moving outside air conditioning unit, new thermostat, maintenance, etc.) and they have always been top notch! They may not still be doing this but we got a discount on the installation for signing up for a maintenance plan with them. I called around and got prices on the filters we would need and the maintenance plan was less than buying them and doing it ourselves plus they maintain the entire heating and AC units. If you can afford it, do the whole house unit - you will NOT regret it!
Definitely watch out for the ill health effects of ozone-producing air purifiers such as the ecoquest. I have a friend who decided on an air exchange system, which is much more expensive (might cost $600 if you install it yourself, or even $3000 if you have it installed). BUT, if you are thinking of getting 2 HEPA filters, and you have someone handy who might be able to install an air exchange system, the cost might be approximately the same. Plus, an air exchange system also takes care of all kinds of volatile compounds that might be in the air from cleaning supplies, paint, etc. There are pluses and drawbacks, but it might be worth looking into for you.
