ACT Exam Study

I don't know if they offer an ACT version, but my two youngest took SAT prep through Revolution Test Prep. We were very, very pleased with their results.

A book or more self-directed prep would not have worked with my girls. Although they're more self-disciplined now, there's no way they would have given it the focus it needed as high school students.

I have been teaching with RevolutionPrep for more than 7 years and can endorse our company with no reservations. Private tutoring is an investment, but we also offer affordable on-line group classes that are very, very effective. Our on-line small group classes (up to 6 students) are the same price as an in-person class, and our larger on-line course (up to 20 students) are even more affordable. I was a very late convert to the on-line platform but our test results show time and again that it is as effective and for many students, more effective, than an in-person class. Classes are taught live by a real teacher in real time via webcam and microphone and students adapt really quickly to using the virtual classroom. That might be a good option if your school district doesn't offer a high-quality, affordable class.

Our district offered ACT and SAT prep courses at the high school, for a nominal fee. Maybe call your guidance office or check the school's website?

Do you have Princeton Review in your area? I believe they are nation wide. Check them out online to see. They have classes in house or one on one at your home. It is pricey but it does help them prepare.

We used them for private tutoring when our daughter was prepping for the ACT and SAT.

The school counseling/college/career center should be able to point you in the right direction. You can also ask parents in your area who have already been through it, your kids' friends' parents with older siblings.

If your child is a good test-taker in general, I would start with a book. Take a couple of practice tests, see how it goes. Some people need the prep course to keep them on track and give them tools to get through the test, some people do fine with a few practice tests to get them warmed up. Check with your local community colleges for courses as well, they may be more affordable than the for-profit businesses.

Granted, this was 13-14 years ago, but I had a lot of luck with Kaplan. They had CD/online courses that gave prep and practice tests. My score improved by four points after doing the CDs and it was already high to begin with.
