This is probably a question for a docter but Id like to know if any one else has had this problem,it may not be a problem, maybe this is normal,I have three boys and I dont remember this happening to my 13 year old at this age. My four year old has been having errections quite alot and I know this because he often describes how it feels and tells me about it because it is very unconfortable for him. Is this normal or should I check into it?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you for all your responses! It was all very funny and intertaining!lol! I feel a little more at ease knowing that the unconfortable feeling is normal. I'm sure it happened to my 13 year old too,I just dont remember that far back. Just wanted to make sure this was normal at this young age. thanks again!

I think it's normal except for the part about him telling you it's uncomfortable. You should at least mention that to your doctor.

edit: Well, I guess it is normal for it to be uncomfortable. I never knew that. Would still mention it to doctor at next regular checkup, or if it seems to get worse.

Lisa G. ROFLMAO!!! Be sure to teach him not to let that one do ALL his thinking! ;D

I am also a cosmetologist of 15 yrs and have 7yr old twin boys. I think this is probably a normal thing, to make my boys feel more comfortable about this at an early age, I explained that when they wake up and have to stretch in the morning, it is the same thing. That their private part is waking up and stretching and if they don't think about it much it will relax soon. It has seemed to work so far, hope this helps. Since you are in to nutrition and natural healing you should check out Arbonne products they are pure, safe, and beneficial. If you haven't heard of them and want any info let me know. I carry them in my salon.

I have 4 boys, and even though erection are pretty common, especially in the mornings, they have never once complained that it hurt. I would be concerned enough to have him checked out by a doctor, or several. or they could be uncomfortable because of something simple like too small undies...check on the simple thing, then call the doc :)

I have 5 yr old and 3 yr old boys, they've both have erections and say it hurts but then goes away... usually just before urinating... i have no real reasoning why it just happens... but if you are concerned I'd probably contact your doctor and just to make sure it's normal...

I have 3 boys (81/2, 6 and 3)
and every one of them has had/has erections.
I am so thankful a friend of mine told me about it as far as infant boys getting them- or I may have been weirded out by it too.
They all got them as babies - and still do now.
"Morning Wood" - just as your husband gets it, so do little boys. Totally natural - they just need to go potty.
My oldest is finally not grabbing at it every chance he gets - sometimes i don't think he even realizes that he is grabbing at it when he is.
6 yr. old- yep, catch him playing with it alot! Trying to get him to cut back.
3yr. old has totally re-discovered it again with potty training. You'd think it would hurt when they stretch it that far! He just pulls on it so hard!
I remember my 8yr. old resting with me on the couch once when he was probably 3-4yrs. and all of a sudden he pipes up - "Mom, look what I can make my peep do!" he was so proud! It is just a discovery phase - just be thankful he noticed it.

N., i had 3 boys, my middle son always had this issue even when very little, as an infant he would have this issue, he could even somehow pull it out the side of his diaper, usually it can enlarge if they have to pee, and somehow this little guy had this issue, it seemed to go away as he was older, it did not happen that much at four , but as an infant, i did know too, that the dr mentioned he was slightly bigger than normal, and i dont know if this had anything to do with it, but those of larger sizes might have those issues dont know, well my son was fine, but dont know about it in a four year old, dont know if this helps, but thats my story, D. s

This is a related, but funny story-certainly not meant to answer your question, but will make you smile!
When my son was around 3.5 he woke up, went into the bathroom and came out, pants around his ankles, lifting his shirt and said "Mommy, Mommy look-it has a BRAIN!!!"
He's almost 7 now, and I will hold on to that story till he's old enough to hear it without being embarrassed!

Just sounds like he is discovering his body. Keep and eye on him and if you see him just let him know we do not do that, but also know it can be normal at his age. If he is not discovering himself I would take him to your doctor and make sure there is not an under lying problem.

Hi N.-
I have 2 young boys- ages 3&5-and we have a whole bunch of that going on here. Perfectly normal and I am certain there is nothing sexual about it so don't worry about that aspect of it. Most of the time it is brought on by them touching themselve out of curiousity and goes away as quickly as it happens. Your Dr. can help you with the specifics, but I can tell you from everything I have read it is very normal. No worries.

My youngest son used to get erections when he had to urinate. I'm not sure if that's normal or not, but once we put the two together, it seemed to take care of itself. He just needed to go pee before it happened. He would wait too long to go and the erection would happen. Not sure if this helps, but thought I'd share.

My son would have this happen during diaper changes as a baby. The Dr. said it was natural and not to worry about it.

Hi N.,
I am a mom to a 6 yr old boy, 4 yr old girl and a two yr old boy.
I would say his erections are normal as my 6 yr old started having them when he was 3 and my two yr old(almost 3 is having them now. It usually starts when they have to go potty then starts showing up at different times. After naps, ect. I remember my 6 yr old complaining to at how uncomfortable it was when he was younger. Ho doesn't complain now and I haven't noticed any for him now. Doesn't mean he doesn't get them though.
I wouldn't worry about it just keep watch and if it is erected to much, go see the doctor.

N.,

We just had our 3 year appointment and my pediatrician warned me to expect that in the next year. She also said that he may describe it as "hurting" and that that was totally normal.

She said that if it happens I should just let my son know that it is normal and if he leaves it alone, it should go away and stop hurting.

YES totally normal.

I use to work at a inhome daycare and we had one little boy at age3 who did that. He would wake up from nap time erected and therefore couldn't go use the bathroom, we were in the middle of potty training so I would have him go sit on the couch and wake up and let the other kids go first then I would take him in and let him try and urinate. It was weird.

We had another boy who when he got his diaper changed he would make himself hard. It was definately uncomfortable on my part.
