My 3 month old baby boy started rolling over a couple weeks ago, but now he is ending up on his stomach when I come in the morning. Sometimes he is facing a different direction in his crib then where I placed him. I don't really swaddle anymore, I wrap the blanket around him, but I would like to find a better & safer way to put him down at night. Please help!

What can I do next?

I really dont think there is anything wrong with him rolling on to his stomach. i put my daughter on her stomach to sleep since she was 2 weeks old. she is just fine. she actually sleeps for at least 8 - 12hrs. if he can lift up his head you have nothing to worry about.

My daughter did that too when she was three months......I used one of those "things" (I don't know what they are called), but they were cushions that you lay them inbetween, it really keeps them from rolling over. You have probably seen them before. When he gets to be about 5 or 6 months, he should be ok as far as SIDS go and things like that, but until then, use something to prop against his sides until he gets a little bit older. Just an idea......

Hope it gets better!

My son did the same thing. By four months he was rolling over both ways. I also worried about it-- but was reassured that if he could roll himself over that he was fine (as far as the SIDS fear goes). The one thing I would keep an eye on is that my son ended up having GERD (acid reflux) and its common that babies with it prefer to sleep on their tummies because it feels better. But just sleeping on his tummy on his own- not a big deal. My son at that age would get himself stuck on his tummy and fuss till you helped him over-- and that lasted about a month. Good luck and congrats on your new little one!

At Babies R Us I saw this really nice pad thing, im sure how to explain it but it fits the baby snug in the side under his arms. u put it in the crib or anywhere. But that would prevent him from rolling over. I may have to by one myself cause my 3 mo is rolling over on his side. not all the way though. good luck.

My son did the same thing! As soon as he could roll over, he preferred to sleep on his tummy. I would go in there in the middle of the night and roll him back over. :) I asked my doctor what I could do to keep him on his back, but he said that by the time they can roll over he is strong enough to lift his head up and clear his face if he needs to. So, from then on, my oldest was a tummy sleeper! Regardless, ask your doc his or her opinion.

I would suggest using a sleep sack. They are great! YOu can find them at Babies R Us and Target sometimes has them. Don't worry about him being on his stomach. My son did this too at 3 months. If they are strong enough to role over they are strong enough to sleep on their tummies. But You just don't want any loose covers in the crib b/c that can be dangerous.

I would stop putting the blanket in the crib with him. If he can roll back to belly he should be able to roll belly to back. He'll be fine, just no pillows, blankets, stuffed toys etc. Good luck.

Don't panic! I did, and there was a response from the Dr. that made total sense: if your baby rolls over, it is because he in now able to move back to where he was. My kid is now almost two years old, and he does take advantage of every single part of his crib. He also refused to keep his arms inside the blanket when he was about two months (strong willed!). Ask your pediatrician anyway, so you can be more at ease; but be sure that eventually, some babies move more thatn other when they sleep.

I would also suggest no blankets and to purchase the sleep positioner (wedge). I have used this from the beginning and it works great for back sleeping or placing on their side. My daughter also enjoys "crib tours" as I call them, by always being in a different direction when I get her in the morning. Sometimes she's in the positioner and sometimes she's tossed it to the side, but at least it helps.

I, too, had a tummy sleeper with my third. I didn't sweat it too much. We'd check on her as she slept and I just know from many friends that lots of babies sleep better that way for whatever reason.

Hello! My son (now 18 months) started to do this too at that age, I bought a sleep positioner at Babies R Us. This worked for about 4 months until he was much more active and able to move out of it, but than I wasn't so worried anymore.

If you don't swaddle anymore than PLEASE do not put the blanket in the crib with him. He could possibly wrap himself up in it and suffocate with all his rolling around. If you think he is cold then give him warmer jammies. Have you tried wedging him. You can buy the wegde at Target or Babies R Us. It is safe and effective. At 3 months he should not be able to roll over the top of it. You just place him on his back in between the wedges. But if he is just too strong, nothing will work.....you will just have to let him move around. Within a month he should be able to lift his head easily so laying face down won't be as much of a problem. But get those blankets away from him....no stuffed animals......nothing except for baby and maybe the wegde.

Just put him in a footed sleeper-no blanket and definitely no sleep sacks, it's not safe. Sleep sacks can twist around him while he sleeps. I wouldn't recommend putting a blanket in his bed again till he is crawling. Walmart has little taggie blankets you could use instead, for comfort, if he needs something to snuggle up to. He should be fine.

Hi A.
My daughter is two years old and was sleeping on her side after she was born. She learned how to roll over real early. But, I started to read about SIDS since I was also scared about her sleeping on her tummy. What I had read was that if your baby is rolling over, then the child knows to move if something obstructs his/her breathing, so it is ok. You won't be able to stay awake to make sure that your baby will keep breathing. Just make sure there is nothing in his bed that he can sufficate on.
Hope this helps. T.

Hello A.,
By 4 months th average baby is for the most part out of the woods fr sids. I say avereage because some babies are ahead and some behind. It seems that if he is rolling over he should be fine. I do agree with a blanket sleeper instead of a blanket or sleep sack, and maybe a little hat if it is too cold. We all slept on our tummies, and so did 2 of my kids (my middle child preferred her back) and we were fine. If he doesn't have any resp. probs. I don't think you need to worry, especially at 3 months and rolling over. He should be able to correct his position if it is obstructing his ability to breath.

Once a baby can roll over, they pretty much pick how they're going to sleep, and there's not much you can do about it. My oldest rolled over at 3 weeks (very young, I know), and slept on her stomach from then on. As long as you keep the crib empty of loose bedding, stuffed animals, and pillows, and the baby is able to move his/her head, you should be fine. If you are worried about him being cold at night, you can buy a sleepsack (or blanket sleeper, I prefer the ones without arm covering). This will also eliminate the possibility of him getting stuck in a blanket.

A., you can find these items called (well, I don't know if they are actually called this or not...) sleep wedges- I have one for my little girl that I bought at babies r us, it also help babies feel snuggled up. Mine is a padded surface with a slight angle and two removeable wedges that velcro onto the pad. Place the baby in between the wedges and wa-la.

If your baby can roll over, you shouldn't really freak about this. I put both of my kids on their tummies pretty much as soon as we got home from the hospital. This won't be the most popular response, but there it is.

Babies are curled forward when they are in-utero. So this is a safe position for them. I've said it before and I'll say it again. Within the last 20 years is when the "back to sleep" thing really took off. Before that, you were SUPPOSED to put babies on their tummies so they wouldn't choke to death if they urped!! Just make sure there are no pillows or thick stuff in the bed that could get in the way of his face or be a hinderance to regular breathing. If he's turning over, I'd just let it happen!

Hi A.,

When my boys were that young, I used a sleep sack. It is basically a wearable blanket that is recommended by the First Candle/SIDS Alliance. It is sleeveless and collarless for ventilation to reduce the risk of rebreathing. It worked well for my kids and I never had to worry that they were cold or getting tangled up in a regular blanket.

You can copy the URL below to see an example of what I am talking about and to get more information:

I wouldn't worry about it to much. Mine did the same thing and once he's able to get onto his tummy he was also able to get off his tummy.
