You probably should ask your pediatrian; however, I do think that they need formula because of all of the iron, etc. It is recommended for at least a year for brain growth. My suggestion would be to maybe try a different formula or not give him juice at all. He really doesn't need the juice if he is getting fruit from another source. He probably prefers the juice because it is sweet. If formula is the only source of liquid - that and water. I would think he would eventually drink it since that is his only option.

He is too young for regular milk but I don't think that's really the problem here. The problem is the juice. He should be getting the bulk of his nutrition from formula or breast milk at this age. It doesn't matter if he drinks formula from a bottle, sippy, cup, etc. What matters is that he's drinking it. YOu can try a different brand, but this is what he needs at this age. Cut out the juice immediately though. It has no nutrition in it and is just a bunch of empty calories and he obviously prefers it to formula (can you blame him?). Think of it as soda for babies. He may not like that you got rid of his juice, but he'll get over it soon enough. He's just too young for it right now.

I switched my first son (who is now 5.5) over to whole milk when he was nine months because he would not drink the formula any more at all but by 11 months he wanted nothing to do with milk at all...

whith my second son who is now 4, I would add 1-2 table spoons of vanilla carnation instant breakfast or pedisure to his formula for taste and that worked well...(my second son also was born with a cleft lip and palate so we had to add the carnation (much cheaper) or pedisure for the extra calories to prepare him for surgeries as he was underweight) (keeping in mind that the carnation is milk based and the pedisure is soy based... neither bothered my son but some kids can have allergies to these.

with my 3rd son who is now 2, we did not need to add any thing he loved his formula for some strange reason and we switched him to milk at 18m from the infamil next step...

i would just not give him any juice at all and he will probably drink milk but he could have a sensory objection to it. out first son who i mentioned did not ever drink milk again after 11 months has sensory integration disorder and milk is one of the things he can not tollerate sensory wise... the texture or something bothers him. but he also had severe reflux and threw up all the time and might just have developed an aversion to it because of that.

Good luck

Hi H.! I would definetly ask your pediatrician before taking him off of formula. While his tummy may be able to handle milk now, he needs the nutrition in formula. The next step formula might be a better idea. But of course he wants the juice, it is so much tastier. good luck

I would stop the juice (too much sugar--empty calories and bad for his little teeth) and allow him to drink water from sippy cup...and call your doctor to check and see about offering him whole milk from the sippy cup.
good luck!

I would stop giving him juice since babies this young really don't need it. Eventually, he'll be thirsty enough and be excited and eager to drink his formula again. I would wait to give real milk until your pedi says it's ok, which is generally at age 1.

My DD also wouldn't drink formula after about 10 months. Had you switched to the Next Step formula which has a thicker consistency? At her 9 month doctor's appointment, I expressed my concern and her pediatrician said to switch her over to whole milk- you should use 2% after they are 2 years old typically. Anyway, she took to it really well when I switched her to whole milk, but I also put in a scoop of formula for every 4 oz. rather than every 2 oz. of water. It was almost like a baby milkshake but I wanted to make sure she was getting the nutrients she needed that cow's milk doesn't contain. Don't forget to give your child their vitamins too.

It might be time to switch him to regular milk - 2% possibly. My mom said that I was about six months and they were out and the formula spoiled and I was given regular milk to drink and would not take the formula that night. Good luck with him and your milk choice. Happy holidays. The other S.

Have you tried Follow Up formula? It's for older babies--I remember my DD loved it. I even got curious about it myself as to why she liked it so much and I tasted it...not bad at all! It doesn't have that over-powering vitamin-y smell that formula tends to have. If your baby is eating lots of foods, it would probably be fine to switch to whole milk and supplement him with vitamin drops. Check w/ your pediatrician.

Hi. Juice is all sugar, and it is really a myth that babies/kids need it. When my son started drinking formula about 10 months, I gave it to him until about 13 months or so. After that whole milk until 2 and then lowfat milk. He is now 2.5 and only drinks milk, water and I have just started givng him V8 Fusion light occasionally.

I'm not a fanatic or anything like a lot of moms seem to be; I just didn't think there was any point in ever giving them juice. The juice is sweet and of course tastes better.

You may have to start a little tough love, and either mix formula and juice until you get to only formula, or water the juice down gradually until it is just water. Then try to add formula to that. Honestly, I would stop the juice and use it as a treat.

There really isn't any nutrition in juice that they can't get from eating fruit or other healthy foods, and believe me, he'll be wanting sweets soon enough!

I know it's hard, but remember it is for his own good. His teeth will thank you later!
